I'm not keen on my name - Jody.

I'm late 30s, and when my parents named me, it was a fairly unusual name. Then a few years later, along came Jodie Foster in Bugsy Malone, and Jodie became all the rage. In fact, Jodie was pretty much the chav name of the 80s:( At least my name is spelt with a y though, rather than the slightly chavvier ie (although I think that is typically a male spelling?) I think it was the 80's equivilent of what 'Enders has done to the names Courtney, Summer etc. My poor mum, she was gutted when Jodies started popping up everywhere! We're a middle class, home counties, privately educated family, not a bunch of chavs, honest!

Oh and the book Daisyegg was talking about was Anne of Green Gables IIRC. Must read that again, don't think I've read it since I was a child!
  • Anything can be a name if that is what you choose.

It is Amelia if you ant to say it like that, but I love the name Emilia as I love Emi, so I'd have been silly to call my daughter Amelia and call her Emi.

Well that's your opinion about the name being vile - my friends daughter is not vile, I am sure she would be insulted with you saying that.

I'm sure they weren't saying the kid was vile, just the name! I don't get the taste for tryndee names. At the end of the day Emi-leigh is Emily, just spelled differently and hyphenated to be youneeq and the poor kid will be correcting people's spelling of the name for the rest of her life.

If you want to know how popular names are look here:

    http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/HTMLDocs/dvc11/babyname.html

My SIL's name is on there (Freya). She was born in 1994 and the name was unpopular then. Now it's really common.

I know quite a few people with names on that list.

My eldest has a Russian name (Ekaterina) and my youngest a Georgian name (Katuna). I also understand the importance of a surname when choosing a first name, and can think of many names that wouldn’t go with Khalvashi!

Yes also as in the margarine lol but their little girl was born the day before Flora Day (Old Cornish Tradition) and thought it was a nice name.

Not to everyones taste admittedly but it kind of suits her.
  • Before I'd read the Claire bits of the conversation, the one thing I was going to add was that I actually think the OP should spell their child's name how they want. Not that I particularly like it when a traditional name has an untraditional spelling, I was going to use Claire as an example of how a plain, common and very unexciting name can still be spelt incorrectly in many ways. No matter how common or uncommon the spelling of your name, someone, somewhere will spell it wrong.

I think the concerns about what will the employer think when they see the CV is a bit off-putting too. We're talking about 16, 18, 20+ years time, not an employer today. The employer is likely to have grown up in a similar generation to this child. They may have been in a class with a lovely Lilli-Mae. I grew up with a tonne of Barry's and Kevin's, noone bats an eyelid at these names now. (No one uses them for their children now - give it a few years - but they don't really have the same social stigma as they did).

It seems there is a preference for the old fashioned names that are returning (Matilda, Iris etc) but I remember when my daugter was born and I was talking to an old woman and these names were 'as common as muck' (as she put it) for her generation. Every generation is different.

Personally I think the OP should name her child with the name they like - not what we like. If they need to ask the opinions of others, maybe none of them are right. I know someone who changed their child's name because none of their family liked their chosen name. They regretted it bitterly, and eventually went through the process of changing it back to what they originally wanted. Just because it's not right for the people around you doesn't mean it's not right for you and your child.

All this from someone whose jaw dropped at hearing a little, white girl being called Beyonce today. :o

No Stumpy. They'd also have to work out the tribute to Studio Ghibli within it too - their latest film is called Arrietty and is about The Borrowers. And me and OH are short-ish so it won't be too bad. Jasper I saw on a grave ages ago so no Twi!!!!! connection, and Logan is OH's idea - middle names are Elizabeth, so Arrietty Elizabeth, will be 3rd generation of its use, Maverick, so Jasper Maverick, X-Men character and Logan James for Wolverine :)
