I have a double barrel name (Anne-Marie) and I detest it. Growing up, my dad always got extremely angry whenever anyone spelt it wrong, and I've had people spell it all different kinds of ways. Ann Marie, Ann-Marie, Anne Marie, Anne-Marie, Anmari, Anmarie. I've even had people get it the wrong way around and spell it Mary-Ann.

My nickname is Anni (I've dropped the e as I don't like the name spelt with an e) and only my close friends/family/people involved in my care know that that's how I spell it. Most other people I don't know spell it "Annie", but I really don't begrudge them for it, because that is the common way of spelling it.

What I do detest though, is when people see my full name written down, and then precede to call me Ann. They can spell my name wrong. That doesn't bother me that much anymore. I just hate people calling me Ann when my full name is Anne-Marie. Either Anne-Marie or Anni, but not Ann. Please not Ann.:o

I don't have anything against Anns. Not at all. I'm really sorry if it comes across that I do. I'm just not that enamoured with the name and hate it when people assume that just because my name is Anne-Marie that they can shorten it to Ann. It has a hyphen for a reason.:o

  • Eh, yes it will.

Who do you think is perceived to be the most likely to be a solicitor:

    Whitney or Celia?

    Daisee Mae or Rachel?

Ti - annah Leigh or Veronica?

    BJ or Jonathan?

Of course we judge others by these things - and on a CV where you only have the written word, you are condemning these kids to rejection letters aplenty.

I disagree with your view on this. If I were an employer and Whitney and Celia, or any of the other examples you give above, applied for a job their names wouldn't come into my decision over which one I hired. What I would look for is how qualified they were for the job, their relevant experience and how they came across at the interview.

I would employ the candidate who I considered best able to carry out the role and represent my company in such a way as to be thought of as an assett to me. No more, no less.

My name is annabelle and i HATE it when people call me Ann too! I get called alsorts, Anna, Annie, Belle's, Bella, Abelle, and i have had my name spelt from Anabel to Annerbell and on top of that, i have a very unusual surname too which isnt spelt how it sounds so i am forever spelling out my name but i have got used to it now.

There's just something about it I don't like. My DH is called Samuel and hates it when people call him his full name. He always prefer Sam and won't speak to you for hours if you call him Sammy (people have found this out the hard way!)

It's strange. I like the name Anna, but detest the name Ann!

Your post has reminded me of one of my favourite childhood books where the main character is called Anne (though she wishes it was Cordelia!) and she can't bear it if anyone spells her name 'Ann'. :)

    Never heard of that. :D

I don't particularly like my name, most women with my name are in their late 30's. I got my name because the daily star page 3 girl the day I was born was named that :-/

I just looked and my daughters name is well over the 70th in popularity. Mine doesn't feature :rotfl:
  • The neighbours up the road have a daughter called Rainbow and a son called Cupid. The lady is currently pregnant with no3 and we await with baited breath what that kid will be called

I chose Emilee from the list but only if spelt Emily.

Our child/ren will be named one of the following:

GIRLS - Kiera (yes this spelling), Georgia, Zoe or Zara with May as a middle name.
BOYS - Kier (like the ITV News Reporter), Logan, Jowan or Piran (both Cornish/Celtic names) with Thomas as a middle name.

A friend of a friend had a little girl last year and they named her Flora.

My mum taught a boy whose name was Guy, but his mum pronounced it Gooey much to his mortal shame and embarrassment.

My own name I don't like because there was a TV character with the same name and I used to get picked on at school about it - but I'm stuck with it now and wouldn't change it.

I gave my own kids conventional ordinary names - I don't want them to spend their lives being ridiculed because they were lumbered with a stupid name, or one that was impossible to spell or pronounce.
