Of the flower names I always liked Violet, but my mother managed to put me off by saying everyone would shorten it to Vi, which does really sound like an old ladies name!

Lily Allen has called her kid Ethel. I don't care how popular that makes the name or how many more Ethel's start popping up, it's always going to be an old dear's name!

There is a little girl at my daughters school called Iris and I think it's a lovely name. Not usually keen on flower names but that one I like.

I notice the OP hasn't been back, maybe they were kidding after all:)

Of the names on the list the least terrible one is Daisy or Emily - spelt properly!

Can't beat a good chavtastic name, I have 2 nephews on my husbands side called Jayden and kayden:rotfl:

No, they are cousins. My nephew had his boy first and called him kayden then about 6 months later his sister had hers and called him jayden:cool:

It's really hard to get nice, but unusual names. Nice names are often popular for a reason - because they are nice!

I don't know, its fashion nothing more, people try for a bit of individualism but in reality we are all sheep. Names ebb and flow.

Take my 16 yr old daughter, in a class full of Sophies, Amy's, Katies and Lucys one name stands out. A girl called Karen, not a eeee in sight. It sounds unusual even tho its a 45 year old womens name as its not heard in the classroom its that name that sounds different and pleasant on the ear. (As it was the reason it was so popular in the late sixties.) Also take the name Sharon and try and strip it of all the negative associations you may have, its from the bible and if you say the name its beautiful and exotic, but because of the amount of people/type who called it their offspring the name has been degraded.

This will happen will all these silly spellings and unusual names. Unless their is a "real" reason for the name, like LM idea of the game of thrones, that child will have an unusual name, but the rest, unless you buck the trend and start calling your children names that are at the moment out of fashion such as Deborah, Karen, Carol, Jane, Susan, you will be one of many.
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

Personally I think you should give a child a name that they will be happy using from playground to workplace. I also think you should give them the option to choose which diminutive they use in later life.

So many names these days seem to be chosen for their "cute" factor which maybe fine for a baby but often subjects the barer to a barrage of abuse in the playground (eg Toyah Willcox has said that her "nickname" at school was Toilet, and was treated as such) to not being taken seriously in adult life, or even just having to spell it all the time because it varies from the usual (read: correct) spelling - see Emileeeeee above. Having to send back numerous official documents to be corrected, gets wearing after a while.

So I'd say, if you want to give your child a traditional Native American name it helps to be a traditional Native American. If you are going to give a familiar name, spell it in the familiar way - a friend was refused a car hire in the US, because, unknown to her, her 2 IDs (Driving License and Passport) had spelt her name "Clare" and "Claire" respectively. They therefore they didn't tally and didn't count as "legitimate" ID, leaving her stranded at an airport late at night.

If you are going to use a diminutive at least give the child the option of the full name even if you don't use it in the family setting ie Tina=Christina, Tori=Victoria. And don't pick a name just because you think it suits the baby: babies grow up and unless you are Chinese, baby names become adult names.

I agree with everything you have said, but not sure what you mean about Claire and Clare. Both are common ways of spelling the name. When I say my name to people they always say 'With an I or not?' As they know it could be either. And how someone could not realise their own passport or driving license was wrong!?

As for the names on the OP - apart from Daisy, if I saw some of those names written down Id assume the parent was a chav.

    And 'Emilee'. I mean really??

I really feel sorry for some kids nowadays with names like that.

The other thing not to call your son, is any name beginning with an H, if you cant pronounce the H when you are yelling their name across the playground!

Jasper and Logan, not Pod or Homily then?

She'll be lucky to avoid teasing in the playground once the other kids realise where the name is from.
Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

Yes, Cla(i)re is common (as is Clair), but that was her name, and I guess she just didn't check properly. Can't say that I go over my passport with a fine tooth comb either, so I can't really blame her. I'm sure she checks properly now.

I've seen official forms correctly filled in then the returned document still be spelt incorrectly. I know that is the fault of the official dealing with it, but that doesn't help if you are stuck at SEATAC at 3 a.m.

We took 4 months to pick our little boys name, no chav type name. We decided on Henry (middle name Joseph) and it really suits him now (8 weeks old), If he was a girl would have been Mollie.

Hopefully won't be too many in his class, betting lots of Harry's though
