But we should know about what's going around in this country, even if we delete/ignore the rest.
Are you aware that we have had a measles outbreak in UK this year? It's been bad around Merseyside, so was glad to know about it so could alert my daughter. There's also been an outbreak in Wales, though can't now remember where, North Wales I think.
If we know what is around we can take extra care.
At least we don't (yet) have to deal with rabies or Ebola! :eek:0 -

I know that at least some of these allow the Authority to do work & pass the bill on to the owner. If the owner doesn't pay then they can be convicted.
In view of the economic situation & the fact that certain places are now, apparently, almost impossible to insure because of flooding etc, it seems likely that there will be more & more uninsured places.
I just wondered what happened if the property was really wrecked.
I guess if the owner doesn't have the money the place will just stay wrecked.I think that the Local Authorities have more important things to worry about than Listed Buildings at present.
 Pointless pursuing broke owners. It'll all be a good excuse for them to sell the land off to developers... After all, developers won't give a toss if the place is liable to flood, as it won't be them picking up the pieces.

or....a likkle silver van man/woman
i actually find it weird driving a car now !
I would be happy to drive our big van all the time too, if the seats were as comfy as those in our old Transit, but they're not.
Despite its size, the van isn't hard to manoeuvre, handles well and drinks modestly, but it's the view over the hedges that I most appreciate. Well, that and its magical ability to swallow things.
The difficulty comes when I reach the big stores and start to seek those two parking spaces neatly in line.....:o
I was once told in Sainsburys, "People like you shouldn't be in here!"0 -

I agree that developers have had much to answer for but so do Councils.
Maybe that will change if we stop subsidising premiums for modern homes built on flood plains? The Statement of Principles is due to end next June but insurers, naturally, want it continued with more tax-payers money.
I know that suggesting we should let the places flood sounds rotten (particularly to those who have bought such places) but if people knew they wouldn't get insurance for liable-to-flood homes then they'd think twice about buying them & the incentive for developers to build on flood plains might be taken away.Yes, at least living on a hill any water getting in would run out as fast as it flowed in.

For all of you here, it might be worth subscribing to ProMED-mail. While you will get reports of rabies in US and elsewhere, weird tropical diseases etc etc, you will also get reports of stuff like Bluetongue in Europe, latest flu numbers worldwide, and lots of other stuff that we should all be aware of. I've been subbed for years now, while I delete at least 99% of stuff without reading there's lots that is interesting. Scary stuff - Ebola and things like that... But we should be aware.
Hugs to all of you from Liverpool!
With ER registrar son home, and a tad worried, he was observing me just in case for peritionitis, as well as bleeding stomach ulcer and inflamed diverticulae. But agrees that its prob viral. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Davesnave, lucozade is just too fizzy to drink!
Those packet salt things are vile
Anyhow just trying some sugary warm black tea
CTC thanks for picking up the package, I'll arrange to collect when I'm no longer contagious. Where does the water go, downhill unless it backs up. Not a daft question, theres a whole science on how fluids move
And Alf's advice on rodding the chimney just had me thinking of the insult "swivel"!!0 -

Yes, water will always find the easiest course to take, CTC.
There's all sorts going around - noro, measles, mumps, coughs, colds, chest infections .......... seems like every bug going is about & taking ages to shift if you get itI know they say that cold killing bugs off is an old wives tale but .........
I think we're all rotting through damp :rotfl:0 -
Far as I can tell, yes. When I say clinker, I mean that black carbonised stuff. Quite light, not like part of a chimney lining. I think the fire has been installed properly, but we are rebuilding the stack as part of the refurb and changing the woodburner then too, so all due for renewal.
I was warned, but I'm fairly practical on things like that, just a bit careless, sometimes. I was good today.
That's a relief, I thought you meant as in cement type clinker. You're talking about carbonised stuff which 'cokes' up.
We can rod the chimney for the Rayburn because that has a flue so holds the rods fairly straight. The big inglenook chimney is too tall & has to have those rods which stay pretty rigid or the brush just bends to one side. The good thing is that we can stand in the fireplace & see out of the 2ft square top so we at least can see if there's a blockage (rhiw had a quick lurk & look when here) ........ so we know when things like the proverbial raven is trying to nest up there  That means a call to the sweep with the posh rods.0 -
as ive got older, i have come to the conclusion that the old saying "what will be,will be" is more relevant.

infront of our houses, they have tarmaced our entrance road etc, but they have done some 'landscaping' with no drains etc, because the council didnt want any surface water going into the local drains etc, the lanscaping has a 'dip' in the middle so the water can then soak away into the ground...now comes the silly bit:cool: where does that water go? I know it soaks into the ground, but how far down does it go? will it try and find its way to a water coarse? OR will it spread out( under the tarmac road), and if there is loads of it, start creeping over to our houses ( under ground) and potentially start causing a problem to the houses? ok the tarmac road etc is sloping away from us, but being off today, has made me think about this type of thing:D
There won't be any more water created, and if the run off from hard surfaces goes into a soak-away it will just end up as ground water.
It's pretty difficult to know in advance how ground water will behave without understanding the underlying rocks, sub-soil and stuff like that. I know that on our land, water seems to move downhill in certain places more than others, and I can pick this up with the dowsing rods. I have no idea what is different in those places though. More clay beneath them?
The chances are that if you haven't had problems with springs or boggy areas in your garden before, then the car park won't make a difference, but no one can be 100% sure till it's been there a while. Recent weather should be a good test I'd imagine.
Rhiwfield, even the fizziest Lucozade goes flatter if you leave it poured for long enough.0 -

What will be will be, indeed.
I have almost driven myself crazy keeping options open and future planning....now I feel que sera sera is far more healthy, if not financially then at least for staying sane.
As I like to say Alfie.... if you lose your windscreen wipers at the safari park then you got to see the monkeys.
I am all about seeing monkeys these days, not preserving wipers.0
