Hi everyone, have been lurking and reading the thread (managed about the last 20 pages or so) since last weekend and I thought I should introduce myself as I felt a bit like a peeping tom
I'm 35 and live with my OH in a rented property on the outskirts of a dairy farm in Berkshire (close enough to be surrounded by fields, far enough not be woken up dawn!)
We have a large garden (about 1/4 acre we reckon) and are lucky to be allowed to keep ducks and dig up a bit as a veg plot. All very small scale but it has introduced us to the way we would love to live at some point.
I have to say the advice earlier in the thread about the realities and the need for an external income are very useful and things we need to consider when we are in a position to make a move at some indeterminate time in the future.
In the meantime, we're content with our home-laid eggs, home-grown carrots (all 14 or so we've managed this year ) and have just branched out into making our own wine for the first time - a must in self-sufficiency I would imagine
Anyways, will probably lurk mostly as we don't do that much and are still very "townie" in our day jobs but felt like I was eavesdropping so hope you don't mind me butting in.0 -
Rhiwfield - a high res image would be brill - I'll PMl you my email. Brilliant.
Itmehonest - I'll take a look at that link - excellent. Funny this subject as not really come across these houses until moving to the Highlands. Can't remember any in Fife.
I was told that the Tin Tabernacles originally came about during the Victorian period when churches started to get concerned about the falling attendance in rural areas. That's why the tin places tend to be found in areas with small populations between the larger places with 'proper' churches. I don't know if it's true but it seems likely.0 -

Thank you, will make sure I don't just lurk then!
We've had the ducks for 3 years now I think and they're great fun; we'd love to get geese (well OH would so he doesn't have to mow the lawn!) but that might be a bit too much for the estate agents.
We're the token townies here as the other 3 cottages are rented to people who work on the farm but we all get on really well.
We did ask about renting a spare field for a couple of pigs but the farm manager doesn't want pigs which is fair enough and probably a bit too soon for me as I am concerned about getting too attached.0 -
Katep, best wine we ever made was with Parsley.
Of course it was too strong, but it was like a fine liqueur.:D
Rhubarb's good for making wine in bulk but may need some blending...which is one of the best bits ever. Try a blending party..great fun.
We find that soft fruit from the bushes we planted are great for making summer ices and jams.0 -
 Katep23  I dream of not having a garden :rotfl:
Failed miserably, rhiw, sorry.
The spoon is very pretty. I can't find any form of cutlery with a similar handle, though.
If it's forget-me-nots & Lily of the valley there are some very pretty china services (Royal Albert, Royal Dover etc) which combine those 2 flowers so it may be ideal for an interested collector.0 -
We cheated and got a wine kit to start us off but if it is successful we will be a bit more adventurous. Got a brilliant independent homebrew shop near us so all the supplies we need.
I never thought of rhubarb wine - we have a rhubarb bed and never know what to do with it (made rhubarb vodka this year but that was it) so will definitely try that next year. Also got an elder bush in the garden so will be using that as well. Thank you!0 -
