We're having a steel profile roof as it's traditional roofing material here.
The tin, when new & shiny would reflect the heat, so wouldn't necessarily be too hot
Dunno about up where you are, but on the west indian islands nothing stays new and shiny for long. One good season of souwesters and the odd hurricane whip snad on metal and scratch it to the dickens. Cars too. the salt, the wind, the sun do for any shine left.
Living in those climes made me Sure i was not a coastal dweller. Riverside would have been ideal, or a lake (i love fresh water wild swimming) but the coast...n'ah, not for me.:o0 -
Body also kernackered, brain doesnt want to watch tv even if I could sit in the lounge. And after two nights sleeping on the computer chair I've got qwertyuiop impressed on my backside
Right then
First. Piccies 1,2,3. the lidded jar is, I understand, is a form of Satsuma from label (Shimazu Mon etc), even though it doesnt look like it and I'm tentatively dating it to Meiji period! Off white glazed inner and base are finely crazed. Query: Do you agree with above conclusions and can you add to knowledge of the style (moriage/date?)
Terrible having to sleep upright in a chair, isn't it?
It is an unusual shape. More of an urn than a ginger jar.
The hot-cross bun is, as you say, the mark of the Shimazu family.
Should we be worried that the cartouche doesn't overlay the background colour? It almost looks printed on - but not quite in the right place. If it was hand painted I'd have thought they'd have placed it correctly ......... but what do I know?
I can't really make out the characters within the cartouche, sorry.
There's this page with some examples, though.
I notice there's a hook on the back so, presumably, it's designed to hang on the rim of something. At 6" it's too small for anything like punch but it could be for some sort of sauce, gravy, honey or cream.
Are those forget-me-nots & lily of the valley?
I'll keep looking.
There seem to be several marks under the hook. Can you make out what they all are, rhiw?0 -
Rhiwfield - the spoon is a sauce ladel I think. It would have belonged with a stand & glass jar/epns holder. There would have been a place on the (possibly hooped) handle to hang the spoon from, or there may have been another clip on the stand to place the spoon.0

LIR - that's why we are going for steel profile sheeting as it comes coated in thick plastic. We have it on the shed.0

Its more coastal carribean living i am griping about now......:rotfl:
Autumn signs today....just two eggs from the hens, and the first mist of condensation on the windows.0 -
Itsme, re spoon I can make out an R in a diamond (I think) but not the other marks. Yes, the enamelling is forget me nots and poss Lily of The Valley...pretty little thing.
Choille, thanks for that, that makes sense, I was thinking cream. Couldnt have been an acidic sauce with the silver plate though.
Best bet for the jar is to put in on Ebay, hope its worth some money and that two knowledgeable (rich) people want it! I'm way out of my comfort zone on that piece.
Choille, in west wales lots of old cottages have tin roofs, makes a bit of a racket at times when it rains!
And on theme of old metal fittings, here's another ad from Chambers0 -
:rotfl::rotfl:It must be awful living in the Carribean - oh, my goodness not on the coast there - you poor sausage:rotfl::rotfl:
The wild goats are back down off the hill where they disappear to until usually early Winter:eek::eek::eek:
We've had a massive temp plummet - loads of hail storms & dramatic thunder & lightening.
Hens are starting to look moulty.0 -

Hey, it was tough......
But i lived in a way most kids cannot here. Like a wild child most of the time, left alone to swim, and explore. It used to terrify the locals who were horrified my my parents laissez faire in letting their primary aged child swim out to the reef and back (or not) and such adventures.0 -
Really strange, but we were just talking about the Carron Iron works - you see their stuff everywhere still - really were a massive manufacturer. They did everything from guttering to cast iron ranges, fire places with over mantles, drain covers etc.0
