Co-op refusing to accept NCD

Hello,

Last year I was a named driver on my mums policy with co-op insurance, im only 23 so this cut costs.

Due to a few changes, this year we changed it so i'm now policy holder and my mums named driver and changed the log book into my name.

Got a policy with Co-op Young Driver insurance at the begining of December 2011. Had an email this week saying they'd removed the named drivers NCD (my mums NCD, +9yrs) this is my first year as policy holder so i have 0 years NCD.

Phoned to ask why? we were with co-op the previous year and had given them the old policy number 3 months ago when i got the new policy. I had offered to send the proof of NCD letter but they didn't need it.

They said that because I had been through a compare site the previous year it wasn't co-op who insured me, it was a broker, despite all the paper work being on co-op headed paper, and they would ONLY accept NCD proof from co-op policies.

Where do i stand on this? I paid over £200 deposit, 3 months premiums and now have to pay £120 cancellation fee, plus admins fees ON TOP of that and find a deposit for another insurance company.

Why can't they accept NCD for named drivers who have been a policy holder for over 9 years?

Read the policy they actually sent you for both years, and the t&c's and post back, as I've never seen an exclusion of the type they claim written down anywhere, but I may be wrong.

are you trying to use your mum's NCB to reduce the premium on your policy?

If so I can see why you are in trouble.

Generally NCB can only be used personally, you mum could use hers on her policy but if the policy is in your name you have to start from scratch and build your own ncb.
  • I double checked this years t&c's earlier, i says they can only accept NCD for named drivers from co-op policies (which I found a little odd but i've only been driving 5 years).

I've read almost all the small print from last years policy 3 times. I've currently got last years NCD cert. on my knee. Written on Co-op headed paper, with co-op contact deatails.

In small print on the bottom it's got a Industrial and provident societies Act. number, i've just googled it and found the same number on here...

... in grey writting at the bottom. which is clearly co-op insurance.

im the policy holder with 0 NCD, which co-op are aware off. Both myself and my mum use the car so she needs to be insured on it but I use it more. It's not fronting as many people do, its being honest!

It would be alot cheaper if we could 'front' but i need to earn my own NCD at some point and fronting is illegal

I don't really understand your problem...

I think what Co-Op means is that if you have a named driver NCD with another company they will not honour your no claims. Nearly every company does this.

How long were you insured on your mum's policy? Whatever the answer to this is the amount of NCD you are entitled to. It can't be 9 years because at 23 you can only possibly have been driving for 6?

You will not get your mum's NCD applied to this policy because the policy is in YOUR name and YOU are the main driver of the car, so only your NCD applies,

I hope this clears it up for you.. Although I'm not even sure that the reply made sense to me..

    Oh I understand now.

You're not entitled to any NCD then. The NCD only applies for the MAIN driver of the car. Sometimes having an experienced named driver will reduce premiums a little, but it is not NCD.

You don't need to be fronting.. You can earn your own NCD as a named driver. This is what you have seen in the T&Cs. If you were a named driver for say 3 years on your Mum's policy with no accidents, you could claim that 3 years NCD with Co-Op, but with Co-Op alone.

    Does this make sense?

I think the OP has a "smart box" fitted so there is an additional charge for removing that when the policy is cancelled
  • But this is a new policy, not your mother's policy, therefore you'll be starting from scratch with 0% NCD.

    QUOTE]

As already mentioned. i have 0 NCD. we where with Co-op the year before but today they caimed because it was through a compare site the policy wasnt with them. the t&c's for the new policy says they will accept ncd for anybody who was insured with them the previous year. when i phoned to take out the new policy in december i mentioned this to them and they said it was ok. i gave them the policy numer there and then, 3 months later, they say we wern't insured with co-op?
