What are you actually stuck on?
I have done some work on my family tree, but it got too expensive for me. Got back to 1847. My family primarily round the Staffordshire area.

I have found my 2nd great grandfather his name was Joseph Chidlow and was born in market drayton in 1834 but I cannot find out who he married, it was Ann on the census form of 1891 and they lived in Prees I think it says back lane.
I also cannot find anything about their son who was 20 (on census) his name was John Chidlow.
what I was wondering is there any forums for family tree's in the stafforshire area

There are loads of resources available on line - some are free.
Googling genealogy gives lots of options.
There are also lots of forums... http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&q=genealogy+forum&oq=genealogy+&aq=7&aqi=g10&aql=&gs_sm=1&gs_upl=2086l6341l0l10954l10l10l0l2l2l0l195l980l2.6l8l0Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. you should go on rootschat forum, its great !0

Yes, try rootschat. There are forums for each county.
It's also worth seeing if there is a local family history society. I'm a member of one and it's great. It's only £9 a year and they sell parish records on fiche and CD-to members and non-members.There's also quite a lot of free information on their website.0 -
Thanks Guy's as usual you have helped out again, I will try both of these, thanks againbecame debt free December 060

you maybe able to get a record of marriage in the General Register office. I did do that when I was stuck. In our local office it is computerise and you can go in and work on a computer and find out all the information that is available but I live in NI but you may have the same on the mainland.0

Try your local library / museum
They often have fabulous and free/cheap resources for researching family history

The free site you need is FreeBMD this is a database of the birth death and marriage registers, but does not tell you much else, as you have to buy the certificate to get more info.
I had a quick look at Ancestry for you as I am a member and I found the person you mentioned, with Ann, the only marriage I could find to an Ann was in 1863 to an Ann Palin. However, I found them in 1871 census still at Prees Prees, with 3 children Leach aged 3, Thomas 9 months, and John 3 months. All three were still around in 1881, but only John by 1891. To be honest 1863 seems too early for the children's ages.
I will add a word of warning, are you sure of where they were, as there are 2 Joseph's from Salop, only a couple of years apart.
Other free sources as you go further back is the LDS family search site, but you do need to treat this with a little caution. You can often get on Ancestry at your local library free.

Thanks for that info. I've also been researching my family tree using Ancestry, but I've come to a dead-end on my dad's side. My great great grandfather seems to have been a well-known figure in Manchester and led the Wakes Walks (I think they were called) every year until his death, but I've come to a dead-end on his birth. Hopefully I can get some advice from the people on Rootschat. My maternal grandad researched the family tree back to 1230! It looks like my ancestors on that side lived within the same 5 mile radius for at least 800 years! On my other side of the family they lived in the same area for hundreds of years too (on the other side of the pennines though). My gran's side came from Sligo and Donegal. It's a very interesting but time-consuming hobby (especially when my computer is going v e r y s l o o o o w l y).0
