Royal Mail Recorded Delivery

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.

I sent off two seperate questionnaires and a request for account information (inc £10 cheque) to 3 seperate banks 7 days ago.

The recorded delivery status is showing as "being progressed through our network for delivery". I've spoken to Royal Mail (as it's now been 5 working days) who said it could be that they've been delivered but because they're big companies - may have been signed for in bulk. As a result, the proof of delivery perhaps not showing on the site.

I guess I just want to see whether anyone else has had this sort of problem? With a potential of 40 days to wait and a cheque sitting in limbo, it'd give me some peace of mind if others have gone through this (perhaps i'm being impatient :))

Have you checked with your bank to see if the cheque has been presented yet?

A couple of letters to banks of mine in recent months showed same message you got on R/Mail's system. One took 2 months to arrive! It went all round country.... The other had arrived but still shows being processed etc. Being signed for in bulk is no excuse for R/Mail not updating each item on their system. Anyway, I don't think that is right - each item is barcoded and has to be treated separately at its destination. This is what we pay the ?77p recorded fee for after all. 99.99% of all my bank letters over last few months have shown as arrived and signed for. Hope yours turn up.

It seems that large companies do not sign for each item but bulk sign.

There are many disgruntled customers who have complained to Royal Mail regarding there no proof of delivery and many have sent cheques postal orders that have not cleared, that leaves you to believe that a bulk pile has not been opened and it must be a massive pile !! From all the complaints.

As I have ex colleague information having worked in a Post Office situation there have been many complaints but the complaints are with Royal Mail and not the postmaster they do not set the postage products.

From now on I will ask for proof of postage and not pay for recorded.

bulk signatures are still acceptable though
the online tracking updates and the bulk sheets are sent of just like the smaller ones
on the PDA it makes no difference if its 1 or 100 items
  • I haven't contacted the banks involved yet (posted the 3 letters last Wednesday). To be honest, I wasn't really sure how to approach it as the fact that Royal Mail do not have a POD does not really give the banks a lot to go by, especially if there are piles of PPI mail to sort through.

Royal Mail did say that if they don't show as delivered after 15 working days - I could put in a claim and it would be investigated. I guess if they investigate and find proof of postage - perhaps then would be the time to contact the banks. Having said that, there can't be any harm in contacting them directly I guess, but i've not a lot to go by when our national mail service is showing they haven't been delivered.

If it helps, the banks involved are Lloyds, Cahoot and MBNA. I took their addresses from the first page of the addresses thread.

The £10 cheque for the SAR letter has still not cleared.

I also went into the Post Office yesterday to make sure they were definitely posted (a stupid question perhaps, but worth asking) and they assured me they would have been.

Perhaps electronic tracking devices on mail is the way forward :T

Then what is the point of paying for the record?

You should complain to Royal Mail. They agreed to provide a service for which they charged you then deliberately did not. That is fraud.

However, I suggest you write again to the banks and get proof of posting (which is free from the Post Office). That will be sufficient for FOS, or the courts, if necessary - they will deem a letter sent first class to have arrived two working days later.

As Custardly said. Even signing for in bulk would still show a delivery status on tracking. Whether it be on a PDA or on paper, it should still be updated and is poor practice when it's not and poor customer services for telling u it's normal.

Definitely put a complaint. Check the receivers have got them first of all, I would still complain though, after all you haven't got the service you paid for.

  • Hi Everybody

I sent a recorded delivery letter to Capital One just over two weeks ago now. When I check the status on Royal Mail mine still says it is processing and my cheque has not gone through my bank yet.

I also asked in the post office and was told to make a claim because recorded delivery only get a signature at the end and if the letter may have been lost but they would not know.

I also thought what a terrible service.

My hands are sort of tied at the moment as it's not been 15 days since I posted...

Royal Mail's compensation and refunds page on their website.

(vii) Items sent by 1st Class, 2nd Class, Standard Parcels and Recorded Signed For™ are not classed as lost until 15 working days after the due date

It will be 15 days on 5th March, so everything will have to happen on the date. I'll ring the banks and confirm with them then whether they've received the letters and cheque or not. Even if they have - i'll still complain to Royal Mail (if there isn't a POD on the system by then).

I've read on the successes thread that banks tend to respond within 2 weeks to confirm that they're looking into a claim, so here's hoping...

If they haven't received them then i'll send the letters again, cancel the original cheque and ask for proof of postage at the post office.

I'm even tempted to use a courier service like DPD or TNT if it comes to it. Peace of mind is worth paying extra for in my opinion.
