'Budget tyres' as opposed to pricier ones?

Is it worth paying for tyres like continental or should we go for cheap ones?

Its for a Nissan Note which has come back from an interim service today with a list of things wrong as long as your arm, except of course for the things that we asked to be checked which need to be checked separately now at a cost for 'further investigation'

So the tyres are worn which we knew and needed to change, they have given us the option of continental for about 90 each (this is for all 4) or Nexion (?) at 55 each.

  • Don't buy tyres from the main dealer. Shop around. Blackcircles.com and tyre-shopper.co.uk are a lot cheaper from decent tyres and budgets.
  • Personally i always go for likes of Avon and hankooks etc as for the cheap price there pretty good.

I would stick with the known brand like Pirelli, Continental, Michelin etc

Those 4 pieces of rubber keep you on the road, they slow you down, get you round corners and cope with just about every condition here in the UK.

Cheap tyres in my personal experience are noiser, are usually worse at braking and unpredictable when worn down a few mm's.

In comparison tyres from the major brands tend to wear better and offer superior ability in wet conditions.

As d.g buy good quality, cheap tyres are leathel and should be banned your car or driving style does not come into it,avon and kumo are as low as you want to go.

we're ordering the contentinals then that he has already on the car from blackcircles, thanks everyone
  • I've had mixed experiences with budgets. I had a full set of maxxis tyres, 15inch on my focus and where Decent. Drove much better once I fitted them but the tyres they replaced were showing cord!!! The next set I tried was 17 inch nankang runflats, these were dreadful it would regularly try to kill me when the temp dropped below 4 degrees, since then I put my favourite bridgestones back on the front and will use the cheapest big name on the rear, currently Goodyear. Would I use budgets again? Nope, not after regularly getting severe under steer at 30 mph in a RWD car, the big names DO drive better and are safer

Nexen tyres aren't all that bad. They're Korean rather then Chinese and have been used as OEM on a few car models.

On a Nissan Note they're most likely quite adequate.

From the above we don't know which particular Continental tyre the dealer recommends - Continental have over a dozen different models.

Is the car still on the original factory tyres? If it is I would recommend that you write down the brand (eg. Continental), model (eg. PremiumContact) and size. This would give us a very good idea of what type of tyre Nissan would use on Note, and then you could buy something similar or even better.

My guess is your car comes with Continental EcoContact 3 185/65 R15 88H. It is a good (eco = fuel saving, low rolling resistance) tyre, with excellent wet and dry grip. Blackcircles sell them for £76 fitted.

I highly recommend not to buy budget tyres. Most of them are very unpredictable in wet are noisy - and especially since you have good tyres now, you could be for a nasty surprise with cheap tyres.
