  • Hi,

if you're so concerned about checking dates, then why didn't you check the date before putting it in your basket?

    Just eat it, and enjoy.

Why would Mars give you more that Tesco when Mars have no control over the dates within which Tesco sell a product.

This is a Tesco issue, nothing to do with the manufacturer.

And Tesco are only required to refund.

I complained once because I bought a 6 pack of fudges but there was only 5 in the pack. They sent me a voucher for £5 which isnt bad considering the pack was only 76p for the 6 and a lot better than what the retailer probably would've gave - a replacement.

But then again, that was a problem in the manufacturing process in my case and not a result of poor stock rotation/control as in the OP's case.

I thought 'best before' dates were just guidelines.

    I therefore agree with Hintza.

They are - unless the food sold is dangerous to human health - cannot imagine how that would work for a choclate bar.
  • Phew OP You have almost united everyone in a pro-Tesco/anti-consumer session, what's going on here?

I ate some marmite once that was 11 years out of date. Tasted OK to me, plus I'm still alive.

Because food manufacturers are very nervous of any bad publicity and are usually prepared to refund and provide extra on top as a goodwill gesture, whereas all Tesco will do is refund. I imagine Mars would then take up with Tesco why they are selling out of date products.

You mention sell by date and used by date... all very interesting Catlad.

But the OP's query was about a best before date.

Were you told anything about that?

I once bought a packet of crisps from a small shop that was 9 months out of date. I told the owner and he said they'd be fine, the date was a best before and not a sell by. He said he could sell them a year later if he wanted to.

    I never went there again.
