Using 18185 from a mobile registered with 18185

Hi all,

Apologies if this query has been answered elsewhere. If so, please could someone direct me to the appropriate thread.

Anyway, my query:

Once you’re registered with 18185, how do you use this on a mobile phone.

I know you must first register the number of the mobile phone. I’ve done that.

I assumed you would then dial 18185 followed by a complete number including the whole STD dialling code.

However, when I try to do this, I don’t get the expected “welcome to 18185” message.

Does this mean calls to 18185 are barred by my provider (Onetel).

Does it mean my phone is “locked” and requires “unlocking” before this service can be used?

Thanks in advance.

  • To call from a registered Mobile Phone you need to dial the following access number: 020-8180 2828.
You will be charged the cost of dialling the 020 number according to your mobile phone tarrif. If you get free calls in your tarrif, these calls will count towards those minutes.

Your phone does not require unlocking to use this service.

As you can see from previous replies......when registering with 18185 you ring 020 number from your mobile . You will pay for this call to your mobile provider and in addition you pay to 18185 for whatever call you make?

Yes, you will also pay O2's payg rate, so it does tend to look more useful for contract users, who also have options of 0844 and 0870 callthrough numbers

If you make quite a few international calls from your O2 phone, also look at their International Caller option, which for a one-off fee allows calls from 5 or 7 pence a minute (for Irish and other European landlines). I'd suggest this for foreign landlines, and 18185 or 0870 callthrough for mobiles

A technical issue related to this thread:

How do you dial an access code from a mobile phone memory (or equivalent) followed by the a destination number from a mobile phone (second?) memory?

I tried storing the access number in a memory, but that then (1) doesn't leave enough digits to dial the destination number and (2) doesn't allow dialling the destination number from memory as one would do without the access code in front. I had to dial the destination number manually - this works, but it's extremely long-winded compared to the ease of dialling a stored number from a memory.

Is there perhaps some feature needed for this which my mobile phone either already has but of which I'm unaware or which it lacks. If the former, what would that feature be and how do I use it? If the latter, what model(s) of mobile phones do people recommend for this purpose? My mobile phone, which I've had for a few years, is a Motorola V50.

    Thanks.

    There are two possibilities -

    1. You can save both the numbers together in the memory, though this is better in the phone than on the SIM card, as many SIMs will only allow up to 20 characters and phones often go to 32.

Separate the numbers with a pause "p" character, obtained on most phones by multiple press (3 times on Nokias) or hold-down of the * - so eg 02081802828p0049173.......

Then just select the phonebook entry, press send, and the 3 second pause is automatic on answer of the first number

    2. Or you can open the phonebook in the middle of the call, either by dialling the access number with a + appended, or by entering the menu during the call and finding an option called Send DTMF.

Search for or enter the number, then DTMF, and you'll hear the tones being sent ...

edit - in either case, you need to use 00 for the international number rather than +

I know this is an old post but I am now interested in seeing how it works? Could someone on a practical basis explain please. Say for example if you make a 5 minute phone call how much will you pay for the 020 number and how much for the phone number you are ringing? Is it time related? Does this vary between pay as you go and contract?
The problem is I doubt if you can find someone on 18185 to explain and I am sure the networks themselves would be less than helpful.

If you have inclusive 01/02 minutes you can use them to call the access number, until you have used them up. Otherwise you pay your mobile supplier the going rate for calling a 01/02 landline number whether your on payg or contract.

You then pay 18185 the connection fee 4/5p ,plus you pay the 18185 rate for calling the destination you wish to reach.

So for example a 5 minute call to Australia Landline would cost.

Cost of 020 call ,plus 4p connection ,plus 5 minutes at 2p a minute.

Do you have inclusive minutes.what destination are you trying to reach?

Thanks for the answer. Can I just check though the first part. The connection to the 020. Is that charged just for say how many seconds it takes to connect or for the whole five minutes.
I am thinking of UK calls. At the moment I am on a contract but when it finishes I will possibly change to payg until I get another contract. I am with orange at present.
Ironically it looks as if you pay more to ring someone in this country on a mobile than phoning abroad.

The call to the 020 number is charged for the full length of the call.

As far as calls to UK Landlines/Mobiles are concerned its usually cheaper to call direct from mobi. EG

    5 minute call to 01/02 number on Orange PAYG 5 x 15p = 75p.

    5 minute call via 18185 . 5 x15 p = 75p (Orange), + 4p connection ,+ 5 minutes x 1p = 5p (18185)= 84p.
