Do you tip hairdressers for your children's hair cut?

Hello,
I'm a newbie so sorry if this has been asked before...

Should I tip my hairdresser for cutting my little boys hair. He is 3 and she kindly charges just £1 for each year of a child's age. His haircut costs just £3. I have never tipped for his hair. I am a regular and tip for my own hair, a cut & colour costing £70, I normally tip about £5.

What is the norm, should I tip for children's hair as well.
And, as we're talking about tips, what the norm for grown-ups... 10%? Am I being stingy?

Thanks so much for any advice or tips.

  • I never tip the hairdresser... I think that makes me more stingy than you. :)
  • LOL - that makes me feel much better :)

A friend at work just said its the trainees you are supposed to tip because they earn next to nothing... ?

  • I always give them a bit extra, my hair is a pain to cut and my both of my boys' hair follows suit. The one place I go to always does a really good job. I wouldn't worry if you don't though, the hairdressers I have been to don't ever seem to expect it.

If you tip at the hairdressers then it's probably the done thing to tip for a kid's haircut too. They might have less hair but they're not necessarily easy customers and I suspect hairdressers are petrified of nicking a wriggling child's ear!

Personally, I don't tip the hairdresser so I wouldn't worry either way. :D

  • Me and dd get our hair cut at the same time. I always just round up to the nearest £5, so usually £25
  • My boys go to the barbers and I always tip £1.
I can't even remeber the last time I went to the hairdressers, but back then my Dad used to pay for it, so I couldn;t of been older than 17.

I'm re training to become a hairdresser but am going mobile, I wouldn't expect my customers to tip.
  • DS has his haircut at one of two places, one charges 2.50 and I tip 2.00, the other costs 8.50 and I don't tip. The 2.50 barbers are a lot more interactive with children and DS prefers it there

I'm with the other poster who says she will tip the trainees. I will give the girl who washes my hair £2-3, or if I am in the local salon, where the prices are very cheap, then I will usually give the girl who cuts / colours my hair £35 to share with the trainee.

My OH insists on going for very expensive haircuts, then tips the stylist an extra £5, it drives me demented! Surely they are making enough money already?

Aiui the correct etiquette is you tip apart from the owner of the business/establishment..so stylists and trainees employed by the salon could be correctly tipped, buit not the business owner (who might not be the building owner of course!)

If your hairdresser rented a place at a salon, as many do, rather than being emplyed, i would hold that as it being her own business and not tip.
