help with tmobile issue. data turned on while abroad.

Everyone I need advice. My crappy HTC mobile has been causing me problems for months, i.e not turning on or just restarting all the time. I am currently travelling in Laos and I got back to my room today and my phone had switched itself on and been trying to update my apps.

Data usage appears to be about 70mb at £7.50 a minute, I checked my tmobile account and it looks like my next bill is close to £500 quid for this mess up.

What should I do?

Had you turned data roaming off when you went abroad?
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Not much. Make sure that this doesn't happen again.
I guess you have not been abroad 'for months' and had every opportunity to get a cheap and reliable basic spare handset before you left (you still can do this).

I hope both mobile data and data roaming are switched off in your settings. If so, a normal phone doesn't change the settings after switching off/on. Check if it is the case with your 'crappy' handset.
  • its a htc desire, i unlocked it use a local sim, but data would not work on it. hence when i put my original sim back in I forgot to switch off the data roaming.

It seems you have no ption but to pay then, the local sim will have it's own data settings that need to be applied to the handset, out it down as a learning curve.
  • what are the consequences of not paying? bad credit score? anything else?

disconnection / bad credit score / debt collections etc etc.
bad credit score may not cause you too much concern at the moment, but what about in 3/4/5 years time when you want a mortgage, and this is still on your records....

Yes, a late payment reported to CRAs, then default. They will remain in your file(s) for 6 years (not 5 as per the above post).
    anything else?
    Debt collectors.

Your best bet is to ask T-Mobile to recalculate your bill as if you'd bought their most favourable data roaming bundles in advance.

Ultimately, county court and a bailiff knocking on your door to seize goods however at £750 they could potentially declare you bankrupt although very unlikely.

Another dumb user + smart phone scenario :D

Why not put the phone into offline mode if you want to play with apps?

Even incoming calls abroad are not free with UK SIM. So, surely inserting a local SIM would have been much cheaper option in the first place?
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
