Vodafone default - please help!

I was wondering who could assist me? My partner and I applied for a mortgagelast week and were shocked that it was referred. We both ran credit reports anda default has been put on my account from Vodafone. We spoke to Vodafone whoadvised that the bill relates to when my partner switched from contract toprepay with them in May last year. The sum is for £13. Vodafone advised that ifhe paid the debt they would request that the default was removed so he paid. They admitted that no payment reminders had been sent but that the debt hadbeen referred to a debt collection agency for collection. Obviously as the debtwas for such a paltry amount they never contacted us. The default notice didnot go from my partners report so he contacted Vodafone again. They againagreed to remove it but that it would take 14 working days. They agreed to sendus an email to provide to our bank in the meantime which would state that thedebt had been paid and the default was in the process of being removed.

My partner contacted Vodafone last night to check that they had requestedthe default to be removed. They stated that even though we are existingcustomers, we were unaware of the debt, no payment reminders were sent, thedebt collection agency did not contact us and that 2 customer advisers hadconfirmed that the debt would be removed, they were now no longer prepared toremove the debt.

I cannot believe they are being like this for the sake of £13. The defaultwill be on my partners record for 6 years - a high price to pay for an innocentoversight. I have spoken to my bank and they have advised that even though ourcredit is excellent apart from this, in their eyes it is a default of a creditagreement and therefore a cause for concern. They stated that given the currentclimate they are declining people for as little as 1 late credit card payment.

Could anyone please help or advise – we are desperate??

Can't help, sorry. They failed to send a reminder - does this mean that they did not fail to send the original bill? If so, then formally they are right and you can appeal only to their goodwill.

Do you have any proof on paper that they agreed to remove the default.

If not, ask them for the transcripts of the telephone calls where they did agree.

This is one of the very few times that you can have a default removed, they made the error in not contacting you to start with, then their promises on the phone. Contact them again asking for the above (by email at least) so you have a paper trail, and tell them you need this as you are going to take the matter further .

I'm sure more people will be along to help further,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

[STRIKE]The OP said about a 'late payment' record, not 'default'. If this was correct, their failure to contact is irrelevant.[/STRIKE]

EDIT: ignore this. I misread the OP. However, a 'late payment' record would be absolutely fair even if Vodafone finally agree to remove the 'default'.
  • Even a late payment entry on his credit rating would be more preferable than the current position I would have thought.

We don't have any proof that they agreed to remove the default - it was all verbally agreed. I am inclined to request any records that they have but I imagine this is quite a timely exercise and we need to secure a mortgage quite quickly.

I will take it further if necessary i'm just not sure how to proceed

My dauaghter and fiance were in the same position, time was of the essence and they just had to go ahead and get
a mortgage on the fiance's earnings, luckily they were in a position that the fiance owned a house that sold quickly, many
arent in that position but it is only his name on the mortgage and deeds. Obviously marriage later this year will change things
but it was not very pleasant at the time

Once again, a non-essential mobile phone network can screw your chances either through oversight or design. It may be better to put your complaint in writing to the Executive Office, as tho often has the desired effect, than waiting to connect to a CS staffer who is feeling charitable.

PAYG is the only way to protect yourself.

    Hi mechanic,

I do recall you raising this some time ago here and can see that we did offer to look into your concerns.

The offer of looking into your case does remain open to you and if you'd like to take us up on this could you email your details across to us via the Contact us form here quoting the code WRT135 - MSE in the subject line?

    Thanks,

I do remember the offer. However I wrote to Vodafone asking for the details of when the default came into effect. I received a reply. The outstanding amount was paid however the default is still in place. I think it was put on file in 2003. The time has run out now.
