Just as a further thought to previous post I decided to look up the word 'unlimited' in a dictionary.

I would say the UK ISPs use of the word "unlimited" fits better with the antonyms (opposites) than it does with the current wording of their advertising descriptions.

IMO Virgin "unlimited" internet (along with almost all of the other UK Internet Service Providers) is limited, constricted, controlled, restricted, minor, modest, finite, qualified.

If the ASA think that the word "unlimited" is a fair description of the service provided in the UK then for their next trick they'll be convincing us that black is white.

aint it hard to track peoples downloading ammount on cable?

hi lewt, no actually it's a doddle to monitor people.

I used to adminsiter a large computer network a good few years back and it was surprisingly easy to monitor what people were doing.

These days software as well as hardware is much more sophisticated.

I use a third party Usenet (newsgroups) provider (which I pay for separately) and I buy an allocation of 90Gb of downloads. When I've downloaded that much data from them I'll need to buy more down capacity. I can log in whenever I like and can see exactly what I have been downloading down to the number of bytes complete with dates and times.

ISPs can do exactly the same thing, although they don't let mere plebs like customers have access to the information they keep on them. (Although for a fee you can demand a printout).

I'm not altogether sure I'm keen on the "Virgin Media may monitor communications, including without limitation, any content or material transmitted over the Service". Sounds a bit like "big brother is watching you" to me. They are saying they can read your emails, see what websites you are visting, track and record every single byte of data going into and out of your computer, just like a phone tap.

I think it is an invasion of privacy. Being in the I.T. business, I always knew that they could do it anyway, but this new wording of the terms and conditions gives them free rein to do whatever the heck they want. Seriously.

It's unlimited now - for THEM.

It's a bit creepy.

Virgin Media isnt unlimited as such, Depaending on your plan the they reduce it if you have exceeded 750mb during the hours of 4-12pm, although you can still download it takes a dramatic decrease in what speeds you can download at, it is spposed to be half, so if you have downloades 750mb and are on a 20meg connection then it gets reduced to a 10 meg connection for 4 hours, this is incorrect as I am on 20meg and my speeds dropped to near a diall up connection for around 2 days, they do monitoe it, they can even see the sites you have downloads them from.

I was chatting to Talk Talk Broadband this evening about their "free for life" 40GB limit and the young guy I got was talking about how places like Korea were streets ahead of us and he said that 120GB connections were commonplace in Korea and seriously fast.

It seemed to me that he had slipped from download limit numbers to speed numbers in a single sentence.

JAYMARSH is reminding us of the same thing really.

I think most of us are exposed to the idea of 8MB speeds as the current norm, but in practice it is very difficult to know what to expect from one provider to the next or from one street to the next.

I am currently paying £9.99 per month for an "unlimited" 1MB service from AOL but they have recently voluntarily written to say that they want to double the speed for free but that I must be patient while they upgrade bandwidth in my area.

Independently, I have been planning to swap to the Talk Talk 8MB speed, 40GB limit offer on Talk 3 or is it "Talk Free" international which currently has been quoted to me at £20.49pm including telephone line rental. I am not sure I will notice any difference other than monthly cost savings because Talk Talk uses the AOL network for Broadband, doesn't it? So I can probably forget the 8MB speed?

The way it is stated in most braodband companys in the u.k is UPTO 20 meg connection, now this is acceptable if you were getting around 16 meg connection, I can only speak for Virgin Media, I for one have only had an 4 meg connection for the past 6 months yet have been paying the rate for 10 meg, now after calls to them they couldnt resolve the proble until I met my brothers friend, he went through my account and I was only on a 4 meg x box connection, now I have never owned an x box in my life and told him that, he said the person who set it up had me on an x box connection and should be sacked !! After being put right my speedsa are now on par with an 8 meg connection which is about right. For 20 meg people you should have speeds of a 16 meg connection. If you are running speed tests and have a wireless router then they will give false reults, the best way for a speed test is to disconnect the router and go straight from modem to pc via ethernet.
