Barclaycard error - payment made but not registered to my account!

This is the first time that anything like this has happened to me. I have a 0% card with Barclaycard and am paying off a balance transfer monthly. I was waiting for the Feb statement to run, as this is due 19th of the month. Logging onto my account I was staggered to see that according to Barclaycard, no minimum payment had been received for January.

.....Except I'd paid this on the 20th Jan!

Luckily I had a copy of the payment receipt with the reference number generated by the Barclaycard online payments site.

So, a warning. Don't assume that a payment is made on account unless it appears! After a 20 min call to Barclaycard, they accepted that I had made payment (just as well, as my bank account had also been debited!)
They said they will "investigate", having taken all the payment details, and promised that the missing payment will be credited to my account.

I have paid the Feb balance now, and told them that they were not to apply this to Jan. I am pre-empting this issue as the Feb payment is in effect 2 days late for the Jan payment - which they have not received!

So please check your statements online, and also make sure you keep a receipt for online payments made.

Can I ask for compensation for the phone calls made to sort this out? I also had a panic attack caused by the shock of not seeing the payment on my statement. Where do I stand with this?

  • If the phone calls really did cost you something, then you could ask. In legal proceedings, litigants in person can charge £18/hour. So you could ask for £20 or something. No doubt others here will have a greater experience of screwing compensation out of banks.

Frankly I think it is part of the game that mistakes sometimes happen - be it bank error, fraud etc. Don't mean to sound unsympathetic, but if a payment error can cause you a panic attack, then perhaps you should consider whether you should have a credit card at all. I don't think the CC should incur extra liability for this.

I'm assuming you made the payment by debit card on their site which should have given you an authorisation reference?

Did you pay on or before the due date as it does take a couple of days for the settlement to go through over the Visa network, why this is in 2011 when pretty much every bank has high speed leased lines I don't know.

TBH I'm fanatical about keeping a check on my accounts, bill payments etc after my old bank decided of its own accord to stop paying a couple of standing orders while I was off work with a busted shoulder and couldn't sit at the PC despite the fact my salary was in as normal.

Of course you can ask. However, I could call them from a landline free of charge on my package...and probably for a penny a minute one evening if I didn't have this package. So what will you ask for?...20p? Hardly seems worth it to me.

Well taking you literally, you perhaps ought to consult your doctor...especially if other, relatively minor, issues bring on such attacks.

You may find this article an interesting read...

...but I don't hold out much hope of a "£10 per hour spent" award, let alone anything for 'distress and inconvenience'.

From what you've said above, is it possible you missed Januarys payment date ? If Feb payment is due on 19th, could your January payment have been due before you paid it on the 20th ? You can't rely on a payment being in time if you send it on the day it's due, better to send it 3 or 4 days before the due date.

I'd have thought if you were paying Barclaycard CC from a Barclays acct it would credit the same day if before say 3.00pm or next day.

I forgot my Barclaycard CC once and remembered on the 6th, my due date was 7th. I paid through my HSBC current account and crossed my fingers after kickin myself for being so stupid. To my surprise the payment was credited to Barclaycard CC on the 7th so I didn't get a late payment fee. Phew!! I'm paying it off this month so that shouldn't be a problem again.

    True, though I took:

to mean that she paid by debit card on Barclaycard's own site so didn't think it would be important who issued it.

When I pay using my NW debit card it generally goes through same day though bizarrely on bank holidays it has on occasion been backdated to the day before I made the payment!

Hi there, EXACTLY the same has happened to my Barclaycard account this month so obviously there has been some sort of glitch in their system.

I logged on to make my next payment only to find no statement for February and an alert saying I'd made no payment in January:eek: - I'd also paid on 20th January and the payment has come off January's statement balance but hasn't shown as a payment.

I've just spent 25 mins on the phone to an overseas call-centre trying to get it sorted out - most of it on hold. I've also been promised an "investigation" and told that it won't affect my 0% rate and that I won't be charged - time will tell........
  • I always used to pay online using my Barclays Debit card until the same thing happened to me last year.
For some reason the payment didn't register and when i got back from my 2 week holiday it was only then that i realised.

Now i always wait for my paper statement to come through the post and go into my local Barclays and pay the whole amount in cash over the counter. I feel safer doing it this way as i have the evidence stamped and signed in my hand how much and when i paid.

From the amount of people in the queue holding barclaycard statements it seems quite a few people pay this way too.

If only you had set up a direct debit for the min amount all this stress could have been avoided or pay online using a debit card.
