.and I will certainly not give them any business in future.
Witnessed an elderly couple being bullied into taking out additional warranty for the fridge/freezer they had just bought yesterday. Three times they said no to the salesman. Heard the lady say to her husband they could not afford the £104 they were being asked to pay for it.
The salesman then said "on your head be it" and proceeded to tell them that the dual motor on the appliance meant they are prone to breaking down and they could well be landed with a bill for hundreds of pounds. At that point they took the cover. You could tell the whole thing had left them pretty confused and worried.
I was bloody livid and spoke to another member of staff about it afterwards but they could not have cared less. This was a couple in their late seventies/early eighties I guess which makes it even more despicable.

Don't worry about that, the way Comet are at the moment they probably won't be any shops in the future for you to do business in.
Although the extended warranty trick is good if the sales man reduces the price of the item you are buying in exchange for getting the warranty, get home and cancel it within the 40 days.0 -

If it happens again discretely follow them outside when they leave and make sure they know of their rights to cancel the warranty. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

When Playstation's first came out, I bought 2 and when I checked the receipt they had marked them both down from £299.99 to £199.99 and included 2x 3 year extra warranty for £100 each machine.Came in handy as I had to swap one of them twice which would have been well out of the 1 year warranty you normally get.0 -
I work in sales so I know what the pressure is like, but you have to know when to accept that a customer is simply not interested and move on.
I picked up a laptop recently was given the spiel on the extended warranty and the anti virus. What should have been a 5 minute pick up and pay turned into a 30 minute lecture on the benefits of a paid anti virus and an extended warranty.0 -
Was about to choose a laptop from comet, this has changed my mind now!0

Wow, they managed to get someone in Comet to talk to them? Impressive.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
They did the same to me and my husband around 9 years ago when we bought a dishwasher, we kept saying no, so they ushered us into an office so the store manager could give us the hard sell.
We did escape from the store with our dishwasher, and without buying the extra warranty but it was an ordeal......0 -
First thing I thought whilst reading your post was what the  are Comet doing selling stuff they know will develop a fault in the first place?! Especialy as it was clear enough they were unable to afford the added £104.

I agree with Azari and think you could have "follow them outside when they leave and make sure they know of their rights to cancel the warranty". In a way of course you wouldnt have concerned them any more than they already were obviously.
Good for you though that you felt able to speak up.
I dont shop in Comet as the staff at our local store arnt bothered for my custom anyway. I dont like to be pounced on as soon as I enter the store and am happy to be left to browse for a short time first but they never come up and ask if I am ok and if I ask a member of staff for advice its usualy met with a comment such as "I will get my collegue who is more knowledgeable to come help you" or "I shant be a minute and will be back to help" and noone ever comes back so I just dont shop there anymore!Failure is only someone elses judgement.
Without change there would be no butterflies.
If its important to you, you'll find a way - if not, you'll find an excuse ! ~ Easy to say when you take money out of the equation!

I did actually question the guy I spoke to as to what sort of !!!!! they are selling if they have to point out it will probably break down pretty soon after purchase.0
