  • Had an old Astra F estate 1.6 8valve R reg paid £450 and weighed in just over a year later as spring cups both sides nearly rotten through after passing M.O.T spending about £150 on M.O.T. so was not happy that it passed in that state £450 a side for new as came with knuckle.

Paid £150 for an astra g estate 1.7 dti x plate. with 99k and full service history, just been serviced and mot'd so absolute bargain, must've been blessed as 2 nuns owned it!. Bodywork a bit tatty but not bothered.

Put a cambelt kit on it when bought and gave full service. Battery died couple of months later... had nearly 2 n half years now and its not been too bad. First M.o.t cost about £200ish if I remember right. 2nd M.o.t cost me nearly £500 as all brake pipes corroded and couple of other bits.

Last week replaced alternator which cost £186.

Now how far do I go with it, its a good solid car but the trouble with bangernomics is it can cost more than you expect on repairs but still cheaper than spending a lot on a newish car.

Its a useful car and diesel estate cars tend to hold their money. Couldn't find another for less than £500 thats why spent all that on the m.o.t as it was touch and go!

I have paid a £100 deposit on a car to replace the Rover. I collect it on Friday and have gone for something a bit different.
I have had British cars, German, Japanese and even French, but I fancied something a bit different, I shall reveal all on Friday with pictures.
I have booked the day off work and the plan is to scrap the Rover at 8am on Friday morning as the tax will have run out the day before, I have already sorned it and my insurance finishes on 11th Feb and the MOT on the 24th, pick the new car up just after 9- hit the post office to get it taxed, I have already insured it for Friday so have the certificate ready for them, and then spend the day seeing what the new beauty will do.

Bangernomics is about to get really interesting.....

Very astute guys! I did look for a Neon as they are cheap and fully loaded and I did see an Alfa 164 but I just dare not do it, I couldn't take the pain. Breifly flirted with the idea of an Gen II Hyudai coupe but in the end I am a classy guy- despite vauxhall's and chip fat. Photos on Friday....
  • Gen1 & 2 Coupes are cracking cars - cast iron engine, very easy to work on. Lots of support...
  • Got a wakeup call this afternoon about how they're bangers.

Ball joint popped out today, leaving the front wheel with a frightening amount of free play. I'd just done a 50 mile trip, it popped when the OH took it to the inlaws house so that was a bit of luck.

Knock on effect includes no drive (driveshaft popped out me thinks) and a lovely silver ballbearing on the ground (possibly cv joint as the rubber is now burst).

Luckily I'm off work for a fortnight, although unluckily I'm probably going to have to lie out in all weathers at the scrappies if anythings u/s.
  • What is the best bangernomics car? I'm looking into japanese or german next. I work at vauxhall and pick up cheap part exs. My car now is astra estate but getting fed up with it.

Toyota corolla estate if I can find one......

Andy- you will find a variety of cars talked about at length on this thread. Japanese cars are a very good place to start. Dull model ranges mean cheap prices, if you are looking for suggestions try-
    Nissan Primera/Almera
    Toyota Carina/ corrola
    Honda Accord/civic
    Mitsubishi Carisma
Mazda 626- these can be dirt cheap.
It must be under £1000 and have as much MOT as possible. Think that for £500 I can get a year out of it and £150 scrap at the end, then just buy another if it isn't economical to get through the next MOT. Good luck!
