Unfortunately springs are becoming like brake pipes, the material used to make them is becoming less robust
As my MoT guy said a couple of years ago, "they seem to make them from cheese-metal these days" !!!......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Where did you buy a £10 car?0

sold the last one for £280 and paid £290 for this one, net cost = £10
the last one was more expensive, net cost £100 and had it for 2.5 years......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Thats really good work.
What do you look for as an indicator to reliability? I might look for a banger soon and am guessing it would be good to find a car where the last owner has had it for a long time, and not much on the MOT list.
What else should I look for?0 -
Just thought I'd pop in and say hello.
I joined the Bangernomics club about 6 months ago when I bought a Rover 45 diesel for £280 to use as a second car.
I'll be doing all mechanical work myself (as mentioned, this is a second car for me, a bit of a project so can afford for her to be off the road for a couple of weeks whilst I fix her) but up until now nothing has been needed. I'll change the cam belt at some point, and she'll probably need new boots and new brake pads/discs before her next MOT in July.
I've got a big soft spot for this car so she'll be a keeper no matter what happens. There are a couple of little niggly faults (the clock doesn't work and there's a small wear patch in the drivers seat) so my plan is to completely restore/upgrade and make her better than new.0 -

That's exactly what I'd look for as well as recent spend. Just bought one that's 16 years old, owner for last 12 and had new tyres put on just before they sold it. MOT history is spotless with no advisory and only 1 minor failure in last 10 yearsRemember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

just general overall condition, and a decent test drive is essential

Getting a bangernomics motor over the next couple of days, 55 plate Mondeo TDCI Ghia X.
Straight swap for a £600 car, so it falls into bangernomics territory.
I first bought it for £8000 in 2008, a family member has had it since late 2010, when I sold it to them. I know it's been fixed and serviced as required over the last 8 years at a garage I know and trust, so all's good.
It's sitting on around 95k, never had the DMF changed, but doesn't seem to need it (cold starts through winter or spring, it started fine).
There's a rumble from the front end, suspect CV joint. A rear rumble has been fixed by moving the exhaust slightly.
Done a 16 mile round trip today borrowing it, managed 60mpg on the trip computer. Massively improved on my normal 25mpg for the car it's replacing.
Tax is halved as well.0 -

Nice oneOur other car (hers) is a 03 plate Mondeo TDCi, had it for 3 yrs now, it's been a pretty reliable car, apart from the "shower curtains" issue, especially on the back doors
