possible email hijack "Look at these fantastic photos"

Options
I got an email this morning. At first I thought it was genuine as it came from a friend and i was expecting a reply from her. She appeared to have sent me a link to photos. the text was something like the title above (not 100% accurate as i have now deleted it). Clicking on it gave no response except to show a string of characters which included my name and something to do with C drive and applications.
Has anyone else seen this? is it just a scam hijack of my friend's hotmail or could it have done damage to my C drive/applications? I haven't discovered any problem yet.

I suggest you run a Malwarebytes scan to check.

I am now running my AVG scan for the whole laptop. Should that include Malwarebytes?

You can get malwarebytes from here:

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Unfortunately with this nasty, if you opened it, unbeknown to you it would have accessed your contacts list and. forwarded the email to all your freinds, and as it is addressed then from you, they may well propagate it.

If not dealt with your ISP could disconnect you, Hotmail have been doing this quite a bit lately, cutting people off I mean.

I also undertand that it affects Android phones too (another friend said thay they only accessed the email on her phone).

Its been doing the rounds for a couple of months or so. A friend of ours got hers from Buck House - no respector of persons!

Yes, I would still run a quick scan with Malwarebytes as advised.

I clicked on your link above but it seemed to be offering spyware protection as part of AVG security which I already have. I don't have an address book on my home email. i tested one of the email addresses to which I had sent a message recently but it had not received this hotmail message.

Try this link instead. Click the green download button on the grey horizontal bar to get the free version.

By quick do you just mean a free on off download? I have looked at the web links given but I am nervous about using anything which might conflict withe AVG paid subscription which I already have.

    It won't conflict with AVG.

When you install it, you'll be prompted to trial the pro version - decline this.

Once installed, on the scanner tab you'll see three scan options Quick, full & flash. Choose the quick scan.
  • Hi,

I got one of these weeks ago, (Hotmail) supposedly from my sister, with a link to click on.

Stupidly I did , and seconds later it had been sent to all my contacts.

Only noticed when I was getting error messages from Postmaster about undelivered messages.

Changed my password, and no problems since.

    Check your sent box.
