Urgent help needed wiring a ceiling rose

Hi all,

Major help required...This morning, I took off my ceiling rose to install a fancy light but it did not work so I decided to put the ceiling rose back on...The silly and foolish mistake I made was that I did not take a picture of the rose wired up beforehand and the switched live coming from the switch was not labelled up....

I have three sets of cables coming through the ceiling each containing a live, neutral and earth...one is from the switch, one is from a ceiling fan I have and the other I assume is from the consumer unit..

I wired it up to how I thought it was but the light stayed switched on all the time as i believe I was shorting the circuit..I have now taken it all apart and need help in how best to identify the switch wire...I have tried the easy pull method but that has not helped...

Urgent help required...Also can I add I am confident and have wired up plenty of things before and am competent in using meters, testers but this has baffled me...

Your help would be appreciated..

  • Thanks mate...But this doesn't actually show me how to identify the live switch wire if it is not labelled as mine isn't...Any ideas on how to identify the switch wire would help?

  • Cheers mate...Does it matter that one of the cables coming through the ceiling connect up to a ceiling fan?....or should this just be taken as if another light was in circuit??
  • To find the switch wire:

With the switch in the on position use a continuity meter . . . when you think you've found the correct pair turn the switch off to check. That should do it?

I think maybe it's just as if it's going to another light.
I'd try it without the fan at first, see if that gets your lights working and then if it does go back and add the fan as if you're adding a second light.
Perhaps there's another youtube showing a fan.

  • Cheers mate...Now I know how to find the switched live wire...

...but with regards to the fan, it is controlled via a rotary switch on the wall similar to a light switch....I don't know which cable coming from the ceiling is for the fan...??
  • Also would the cable going to the fan also not have a switched live as it is also controlled via a switch on the wall?....

    I'm not sure.
If it were me i'd just go for the lights for the moment, once they're working at least you have time to suss out the rest. To be on the safe side before you turn the power on put some tape over the wires that seem to be going to the fan.
Will be going dark soon so as long as the lights work for tonight.

The fan will probably be the next "light" in the circuit, so the permanent supply continues on to that. If you have identified the wires going to your switch, then the others will just be connected like to like. The live feed to the light you are working on is the one going to its switch, with the return being the switched live.
