Holiday clothes

Hello,

I went on holiday a few years ago and bought/took a new outfit to wear every single night. I wore them on my holiday then hardly ever again.

The next year I went I learned my lesson and bought 4 dresses from Primark added up to about £30 (The beach sort, but they looked ok) and said I am only taking these for at night and saved loads of money. But it did not feel the same.

This year we are going on holiday in September and I am due to do an "audit" of my clothes. I did not go abroad last year but bought some summery stuff and did not wear any of it due to the awful summer. From memory I think I will only need the odd bits. (2 bikinis, couple of shorts)

The shopaholic in me wants to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, and disregard last years stuff, I love new clothes and would love to have to cut the tags off every day night.

The moneysaving spendthrift in me says "you know you want to OP your mortgage even more, so you can move quicker" (trying to get 20% in equity deposit for next house)

Someone talk some sense into me!

Would you indulge yourself?

Isn't it a bit early to be thinking about clothes for a holiday in September?

Not for me! Lol. The summer stuff is just coming out and I think I won't be able to get summer stuff after May. So only have limited paydays to spread the cost over.

  • I am also a shopaholic. I buy new clothes most weeks and would certainly buy a few new things to take away if I could afford it. However - I wouldn't even be thinking of clothes for September in February. Your tastes may change, items may go in the sale. Hang fire and see how you feel in the summer.

Well, Im a cheapskate. Its always tempting to have 'new' for hols but in reality not really necessary.

For the last 3 years hols (included this years- not till August) Ive been on a mission. I scour the charity shops. Obviously this dosnt work if you are a fashionista who must have this years trends.

Im lucky enough to have 3 local charity shops I love. One is a bit more upmarket and has the 'better' stuff, one has loads of stock but you have to rummage and the 3rd one sells things for a pound, one week its the trousers, nest week the tops, next week skirts.
They also sell shoes £1 a pair and its amzing how many they get in that look unworn (Im fussy with shoes!).

The stock changes really quickly and this morning I got 3 tops for my hols, 2 were Per Una and one is Next. All are in excellent condition and only £1 each. I wont wear them till my hols so I will feel like they are 'new' to me.
Last year I went to Egypt and had a case full of things I coldnt have afforded new.
I love it, its my weekly challenge to find something.
Im going to a wedding in 2 weeks time and I got some silver strappy shoes (unworn) and a silver handbag for the grand total of £1.50.
Dosnt work for everyone but I feel robbed if I pay over £3 for a top now.

Sounds like you've already overindulged over the past few years - take the clothes you've already got and barely worn! I haven't done a beach holiday for a few years and will use what's spread across cases already, plus a charity shop shop just before I go in July.

  • Thanks everyone. I'd just like to say I don't have to go and buy the clothes necessarily in Feb for a Hol in Sept, but I do have to think about paying for them and keeping money back from wages and plan. hence why I am asking now.

  • i am in the process of packing my things for a 2 week stay in cuba.
basically i am still going to be bringing the same stuff i took to kenya last year.
i havent brought any new clothes for this holiday.
for me the clothes you wear abroad are not the same stuff as you wear in the UK in the summer.
    just my thoughts.
mind you all my stuff isnt really dated- holiday tops, jeans, ( the white holiday trousers lol) stuff like that.

Why not put aside money from your wages anyway?

If you decide that you do want/need some new clothes, you can use the tips on this thread and buy the clothes as economically as possible.

If you decide that you don't want/need new clothes, you'll have a nice little nest egg - which you can use as extra spending money for your holidays, or for somethng else.

I buy bundles off clothes off Ebay. That way I can wear the items I like, sell the items I don't, and end up with some clothes that I never would have thought of buying in a shop, but actually really like!

I think I've spent less than £100 in the last year on my clothes, although did spend £120 on a pair of boots!

I really don't get the obsession with new clothes.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I can understand that. But it is just something that I like. I don't understand why people like brand new cars when they lose so much money/depreciate so quickly but suppose we are all different!
