Assuming the plumber will accept debit cards I am pretty confident he will be ABLE to accept credit cards. The issue is probably that he does not want to because it costs him a bit extra. Many places charge 2% extra for credit card payments. This is far less than it would cost you to take out a loan so the sensible solution, to me, seems to be offering to pay the 2% = £24.
If he is asking for it in cash it may well for tax avoidance purposes. Personally, I try not to facilitate these. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I'd tell the repair man to mail me an invoice for the money, and then to leave. If he refuses to leave, the police would be called.0

Personally, I'd reiterate that I was told that the company took credit cards and ask him to give me the company bank details so that I can transfer the money into the account 0900 Monday.
I'd also check him/the company on https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk over the weekend and if not registered I would be calling my local Trading Standards Office for advice on Monday before handing over any money !0

died in the hot bath?It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0
