im about to buy a dell laptop from the dell site and ive chosen
"Collect & Return, 90 Day Service only".
Does this mean if anything goes wrong in 90 days they will sort it out? And if something happens after 90 days they wont fix or replace it?
Does this mean there is no warranty after 90 days?

you still get a years warranty, but you have to pay to send it back, if it proves to be a faulty component on their part I'm sure they re-imburse the postage

I also want to buy a dell 1501 and was concerned about this option. I was planning not to take the 90 day return, but when I spoke to Dell last month they didnt confirm that there would be a year's warranty, or anything like Browntoa's comments. They are a bit careful with their wording, aren't they? I also understand if something goes wrong with Dell's out of warranty they can only be replaced with dell components which are very expensive.
I think what I object to is their non disclosure of costs etc. If it wasnt for the fact that I have been advised Dell is the way I should go, then I would look elsewhere, except I refuse to buy a HP

This is just basically advise on how to save £100's off your next PC or laptop from dell by following some simple advice.
You can always haggle over the phone with Dell, as i received an extra £100 worth of stuff on my laptop for free of charge on top of all the other offers they applied as standard.
We also ordered a PC for my gf's son (totalling £454 in the end), which is where they can apply the most discounts on PC's and we ended up getting over £150 off the price by downgrading a little, adding other stuff on and negotiating some more but it gets a little harder like this but we didn't need the other stuff included and ordering another PC that was more suitable from the beginning would of ended up costing a lot more, which may be useful to some of you.
My friend is the king of negotiating with Dell though, as he always gets money knocked off and receives loads of free stuff, accumulating to a few hundred pounds every time regardless if it's not a top spec PC.
My friend actually added several things on to a PC package, got money knocked off and they gave him a 6MP camera, so negotiate for a while to get the best deal by being persistent and telling them what you want by being assertive but without being completely rude.
My advice is to call them and tell them you've seen a cheaper PC on the highstreet but you were advised from a friend that negotiated with them to try and see how much you can reduce the price before you buy elsewhere .
If they do ask for the details, that is a good sign, as they can see that they negotiated a lot and they now expect you will probably want something similar, so theyll try and be more flexible and they only ask if theyre willing to negotiate.
Unfortunately, you will come across salesman that will have no intentions of negotiating whatsoever and if this is the case, tell them you haven't got time, as you're very busy, so if they're not willing to negotiate, you'll take your business elsewhere and if they're still being difficult, then hang up the phone and call them again until you come across someone that is willing.
Once you do come across a salesman that is willing to negotiate quite a bit, make sure to get there name and extension number (this is crucial, as you will require to speak to them on more than 1 occasion and you can get them to call back as well to save your costs).
Make sure you don't accept the first offer, try and negotiate as much as possible and remember that they don't know you and they will never meet you, so you have nothing to be shy about but they're actually desperate for your business, so you can try as much as you want to get the best price.
I also noticed that if you tell them the PC is for a small business, they can offer you slightly further discounts, as the PC we bought was listed as business but the other salesman we spoke to that completed the deal knew we were home customers but went ahead with the deal anyway and said they must of been desperate to complete the sale.
VERY IMPORTANT: dont forget to keep calling until you come across a salesman that will negotiate, this may take several calls to find the right person but once you do, you should be able to save at least a hundred pounds or two on any PC that is listed £500 or more (with money off or extra accessories) and laptops will be harder and have smaller discounts but if you negotiate hard, you can get good discounts too.0 -
As regards replacing components, you can generally fit any replacements from any manufacturer. This did not use to be the case, particularly with power supplies, which used to be Dell-specific.

I have had 3 Dell computers and none of them have ever gone wrong. I just assumed I had a one year warranty but since I have never had to claim under one I did not know it was only 90 days.
It would make me think twice about buying again if every other computer had a one year warranty.0
