I'm sorry but dismissing the idea that a student in financial trouble should take a job is ridiculous. Applications to funds like ALF will assume you have part-time work earnings and it is basically expected that a student in financial difficulty will seek to improve their situation by working before approaching other sources for help. Everyone can find time to work 1 day a week if they want to. I refuse to believe that people wouldn't have time for that. I've always managed 25-30 hours a week.

For SLC you declare taxable income, interest on purchase of business assets is tax deductable. It might be complicated but I don't think you understand it. It sounds like it is because they are repaying heavily on the loans, the repayments are not tax deductable.

Lots of people don't get enough loan to pay rent depending on where they are studying and the type of accommodation they apply for and are allocated.

I'm not dismissing the idea that students should take part time work. What I am saying is that it is only part of the solution. The means testing system is designed so that noone should be forced to work part time.

Noone should begin a degree course if they are already in financial trouble. It is setting yourself up to fail - you don't want to have to withdraw due to financial concerns and waste a few years.
