HETAS is the same as a lot of the other "money making" your not qualified so can't scratch your own backside things that we have in mainland UK.

A Badger, like many people, isn't a fan of HETAS (or their ilk).
He is, however, trying to point out what the law states.

Not having it signed off by either HETAS or the local building inspector, probably, invalidates your house insurance in the event of a fire.

Op, if you FIL has installed it to manufacturers specifications then you won't need the heat shield to protect the plaster. There should be none near enough to suffer damage.

I won't ask if he installed a CO alarm or anything else that is part of a decent installation as i don't need the abuse :D

Assuming it isn't to protect the plaster and is for energy efficiency you might consider a stove fan rather than a heat reflector.

Please note i don't have a stove fan, so i can't recommend them, they are just the new way of doing it.

What is this HETAS crap anyway? Im from NI never heard of it

That is because HETAS have no jurisdiction in NI. Here the law regarding solid fuel installations differ - we have to have ours signed off by the panning department

Scotland have the same - someone has to come out and check that the work is to legal requirements before siging it off and issuing a certificate

Without that certificate your insurance doesn't cover you nor will you ever be able to sell your house till you get one.

Hetas registered fitters are supposed to be trained to the latest standards and can issue the certificates themselves

A badger and so many of us dont put a lot of store by Hetas as they are self governing - they make up the rules and police them as they see fit. But the rules are there and they have to be adhered to be it by a Hetas installer or your local builder with the local council signing off the work
