Hi there
My dad in law has just installed our multifuel stove and has said we need to get a heat reflector shield to 1) ensure the plaster behind it will not crack and 2) to maximise efficiency. He thought we could get one at Wickes. Er no ...wickes did not have such a thing neither has b+q I have googled and it seems neither does any other store in the uk, all that is coming up is american stores and camping shops.
Can someone please point me in the right direction because we need one of these asap!!

Um... is your father in law a HETAS registered installer, or was it passed by the local building inspector?
I may not approve of the system, but I'm afraid the meddlers in Parliament have made it a legal requirement.0 -
um he has installed chimneys and fires for donkeys years, I have asked a question and been answered with several questions- not really what i was looking for Badger, can anyone actually help?
surely someone would know where i can get a stainless steel heat reflector??0 -
make one
At the end of the say if the stove has been installed to building regulations its something thats actually not required as the stove wont be close enough to the plaster to do any damage
If you FIL was au fait with the regulations regarding stove installations he would know this
Installing chimneys and fires for donkeys doesnt make him qualified0 -

How close is the stove to the plaster? Our stove came with instructions that gave the minimum space that had to be allowed around the stove. Has he installed it closer to the plaster than it should be?
After two winters, the plaster and the paint on it are fine around our stove.0 -
The inside of the stove opening should have been cemented not plastered, a reflector IMO doesnt give a good look0

It has been cemented in . It is away from the wall so im sure he has done it by the guidelines. Im sure he recommended it for heat efficiency and the small risk of a possible plaster crack. Suki shall I email his qualifications for your approval ?0

I remember a guy who was sure he welded a pipe up correctly, joint failed miseribly, causing all kinds of trouble through spillage!!
You need a heat shield, just in case install causes a house fire, a decent fab shop will cut what you require for beer tokens, ask for no less than 1.6mm thick stainless steel.........

Mail whatever you like.
You were the one who got snippy when asked if your fil was Hetas approved or if not if the installation had been approved by the planning dept
End of the day if he was or it had been, you would know such a plate wasn't required, indeed your search for such a product should have also indicated its not something that is recommended nor required
If you don't like the answers then dont post the questions. A Badger was not being rude to you just asking a pretty relevant question0 -
I did not post to be quizzed about my fil's qualifications, he is a qualified builder and has been for 35 years- I asked a simple question as he is away on holiday so i cannot discuss it with him...you have just highlighted alot of what is wrong in this country today - a culture of busy bodies and a nanny state...who do you think you are, the fire installation police? Actually dont bother answering that, its obvious enough.0

What is this HETAS crap anyway? Im from NI never heard of it0
