Deskjet printer ink

My son-in-law and I each bought a HP deskjet 2050 printer last year and we now require both B&W & colour ink. The code is HP301 for each. We have noticed that in the main, replacement inks contain 3ml but there is a little advertised one HP301XL which contains 12 ml and pro rata, it seems cheaper to buy that way.
Prior to ordering, someone somewhere suggested that Asda do a compatible, but I can't find it. So, is anyone aware of such an ink please?

i bought an hp 1050 in asda sunday and they did do other hp inks and the prices did seem very reasonable,so worth an investigation i think
i didnt realise only 3cc though
i also bought an ink injection kit for the lexmark i use as its been parked up ages, anyway i got covered in ink last night and the thing wouldnt work so i did a google and everyone says you need to inject them within 10 minutes of them running out,oh well live and learn0 -

My son-in-law and I together tried injecting using Tesco's brand. The black went in and was acceptable, however the colour is not to our liking.
As for HP ink, if you enter your particular requirement ie HP301 into google, Amazon tend to come up first, if you follow down to User Reviews, a guy called Stephen has written a contribution which is enlightening, in that whist most of HP cartridges contain 3ml, they also do a little known larger size which would be HP301XL, the amount may be four times greater, but the cost not much more than the normal size.
Having said all that, I am now asking myself why we're looking for compatibles, I must have another word with him. (lol)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
did a quick search via ebay for capatibles using the HP 301 XL and they all seem to be remanufactured cartridges,
Compatible HP 301 XL Colour & 301 XL Black Ink Cartridges - HP Deskjet 1050
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-100ml-INK-REFILL-KITS-HP301-HP301XL-HP-301-XL-HP-363-HP-364-CARTRIDGES-/170694555781?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_Printing_PrinterInkCatridges_JN&hash=item27be303885
oops, for £19.89.
reason for looking for compatibles, they are cheaper than the originals, and usually contain an equal or more amount of ink depending on manufacturer.
aka HP 3cc, compatible would be anything from 3cc up.
personally I would scrap the printer altogether and buy an epson which can use compatibles like the sx200 for 50p per cartridge.
take my epson compatibles, epson originals 6ml, my compatibles each cart has 18-19ml dependant of seller, and just as good as the originals.
a set would cost around £24 for originals, i can buy 14 for £7 via ebay.
note: to save money on ink always buy a printer that uses separate colours, not a 3 in 1 cartridge. simple reason, when 1 colour is used you only have to replace that 1 colour, with the other cartridge you have to replace the entire 3 colors0 -
All good interesting stuff. My son-in-law did say yesterday that despite us both having newish printers maybe we should go along that route but I can't get my head round that, it seems a waste. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Ask yourself the bigger question, which is more of a waste.
1 keeping the HP and wasting money on original cartridges at whatever price they are, and to keep paying through the nose for them.
2 buying recon cartridges which will have equal amounts of ink as the XL carts for £20 everytime you need to replace them.
3 buying a reasonably priced epson printer £30-50 depending on model, which can use cheap compatibles which have more ink in them, which equals more pictures / prints than the HP, which in turn means less paying out in £ to do it.
I've had my epson for 3 years, and i'm still using the compatibles i bought 3 years ago. so in total i've spent £54-56, printer was £44 sx200 and compatible where £11.99 i think for 14 cartridges at the time, they've come down in price over the past 3 years.
due to marty999 post i will add the new prices for the sx200 i mentioned, same 14 cartridges £7 works out a 50p per cartridge and includes P&P
In your original post you didnt say how much printing you do.0 -
I too have a perfectly good HP all in one printer gathering dust in my loft which I can't afford to run, due to the extortionate prices of their chipped inks! I decided to cut my losses and buy an equivalent Brother printer, and with the compatible inks I can get 28ml of black or 20ml of the other 3 colours for under £3 each.0

These have a refill by post option for some HP Printers, scroll down for those
http://www.refreshcartridges.co.uk/HP+DeskJet+1000-4999+Series-c-24_872_948.html
Currently £7 for the black and £9 for the colour, though it doesn't mention size of cartridge, so could be worth asking them if they will refill XL ones for the same price0 -
just looked at the page you posted santer, there more expensive than the ones i posted, the price i posted was for both black and color,
13.47 for the black 301XL
13.47 for the color 301XL
26.94 for both.
Compatible HP 301 XL Colour & 301 XL Black Ink Cartridges - HP Deskjet 1050
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-100ml-IN...item27be303885
for £19.89 both. saving £7.05,
mind you £20.67 for the original Hp 301 XL black and colour = £41.34, therefore a saving of £21.45.
Epson printer guide to above cost to see if that makes a difference. and the epsons ahown are all wireless.
http://www.comet.co.uk/c/Printing/Multi-Function-Printers/1970#/Brand/EPSON=1970+4294966902
using the top one as a guide
Epson SX435 all in one printer. £49.99 current price, could get it cheaper.
12 compatible Ink cartridges fox sx435W £12.95 thats 3 sets of refills, high capacity should be 13-15ml
so 1 set of HP originals is almost £7 less than a new epson printer. or 2 sets of remanufactured and refilled carts of the XL.
so for the cost of 3 sets of remanufactured carts would be basically the same as the printer and 3 sets of refills for the epson. and the epsons would last longer.
no contest really.
note: the HP uses a tri color cartridge so when 1 color is finished the other 2 are wasted whereas the epson cartridges are all separate so you only need to change the colour thats empty.0 -

andy2004 should look at the post I made as it is about the refill by post option, nothing about the other inks, the link was provided so it could be scrolled down to the refills.0
