Don't assume £/discount shops are the cheapest. Supermarkets et al can have deals that make them better.

Shopping around for best deal is easier than ever. A quick google can save you lots.

If buying instore don't be afraid to ask for a discount or a deal. Spending £150 on a phone? Ask about an accessory. Buying something big? Ask for a discount and/or free delivery etc. If can make buying offline cheaper when you look at the bigger picture.

Swat up on your consumer rights like the SOGA. It comes in handy more than you think.

Stay calm and polite and know the correct complaint procedures should anything go wrong. You get more help if you're not threatening/abusive.

Always look to get pleasure from things that are free or cost little, and hang around with people who care more about your company than the things you are able to buy.
My great-grandma taught me this and I am passing it on to my grandchild (whose dad tells me he is so grateful for the lesson)
BIG BUT - this is a lesson that has to be lived and demonstrated, not just said or written.

-"Fail to plan and you plan to fail". Check the fridge and the cupboards and make shopping lists every time you go shopping. Plan what to do with leftovers.

-Emergency pizza: A pizza on standby in the freezer for when you've been to the pub and can't be bothered to cook- cheaper than a takeaway and won't make you as fat.

-If tempted to borrow to buy something, think: If I couldn't borrow and had to save up for it, would it be worth it?

-How much does your daily coffee/paper/pack of cigarettes cost you over a week? A month? A year? What could you do with the money instead?

-"What's in it for them?" Why are they offering this great deal?

  • If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

Always look at the smart price option, if you don't like it, fine, but always try it. Can't bear smart price beans but furniture polish!?! Whats the difference

Always save, set yourself a monthly budget and live with it. Increase how much you save to match how much you earn.

    Always take a packed lunch.

    Never take money to work.

  • Dont hoard it, flog it!!

    This applies to

Mobile phones - when you upgrade send your old one to a website such as Fonebank

Clothes - sell on ebay, asos marketplace or even one of the cash for clobber places

Games/CDs etc - sell them as soon as you lose interest in them

Books - Sell them on Amazon

Miscellaneous Junk - ebay or car boot sales
