iphone or not

I've always said I'm not getting an iphone! I got a HTC Wildfire last January, bought the phone outright and have a tesco sim only 30day contract - fine for what I use.

I get bored of phones fairly quickly and am also finding the HTC quite slow. A family member and her partner bought iphone 4s's last week and I was jealous - think I want one.

I can afford it but not sure if in my head I can justify spending £500 outright on a phone. I don't want the 3gs but do want facetime, but not bothered about siri. So the 4 should be fine, however if that's going to be out of date come August maybe I should get the 4s!?

I'm just wondering what people think the best deals are at the moment? I've seen Martins article but this covers 3gs and 4s but not 4.

I have seen tesco - either sim only at £12.50 a month, but can't find a price for the phone alone from them. Or their contract for 24months, with £130 for handset and £20 a month - more money but I'd get a new phone at the end of 2 years when I upgrade - any good deals/opinions?

  • I dont think you can compare a £500 phone with a £130 one. If you have got £500 spare for the latest toy buy it.
  • the 4 will also be out of date come august sep when the next one comes out

    up to you though
    What goes around-comes around
  • No, don't bother - I got a Samsung Galaxy S2 a couple of weeks ago, much cheaper than the iPhone (at least £10 a month cheaper than iPhone 4S) and it's a lovely phone, many say it's better than the iPhone, for which you pay a hefty premium for the brand status and image. But it's unnecessary extra spending. Ultimately it comes down to how much you want the latest trendy fanboy gadget and how much extra you're willing to pay for that.

The SG S2 is lightning fast and you can get it 'Free' from £21.50 a month on o2 via Phones 4u :)

Just looked at the galaxy s2 on Tesco (who I'm with at the moment and happy with) and for a £20 a month contract, 24 months - the handset price is more than the iphone 4 and the contract is the same?!

I doubt that to be the case, anyways get the iphone so that you are not left wondering, as others have mentioned comparing a budget android vs iphone is not a fair comparison, I have the wildfire (amongst other handsets) can't remember if that does video calls, but still if you can afford the handset, then there is no need to justify to anybody but yourself, only you can decide if it is worth the premium or not.

    but do want facetime

Farcetime can only be used via wifi, however with an android phone you can use google talk to do face to face chat via wifi and 3g (signal strength permitting), which is one up. Obviously both phones need to be high end phones with front facing cameras. But the iphone 4s is also a high end phone!
    .....

  • Yeah but Skype can be had on Android, iPhones, Macs and PCs allowing easy face to face video calls.
The iPhone 4 has better battery life than the Galaxy. Wife has the Galaxy S2, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Off the charger at 8AM, she's not a heavy user, battery done by about 8PM. Yeah it has user replaceable batteries but thats just poor.

With some management of apps/services etc (i.e. switch off GPS/Wifi, background apps) you can increase the battery significantly. I find that with quite heavy usage, combined with careful 'juice' management, I can get a full day's use with the S2 no problem. Most Smartphones need to be charged daily anyway for all but the light users. Complaining about poor battery life in a Smartphone is like complaining about poor fuel economy in a performance sports car!

The iPhone 4 is not the latest iPhone hence why it would perhaps be cheaper than the S2 in some cases.

why bother asking? there's always a theme to these kinds of threads.

Person asks should I get an iPhone or not or some other random phone.

person gets good advice about how the iPhone is an over hyped gimmick
and how much better phones are out there for a lot less money, HTC evo 3D,
HTC sensation, Samsung galaxy SII etc etc etc

person goes against all advice and says they are getting an iPhone.

Is there some clause in the Apple contract that says you must start at least
    one thread like this?

Is this a general observation or an attack on the OP?
I can be missing something, but what I see is the OP asking the original question and then replying
