I think thats crazy!!! (ok ok, I'm no expert just my opinion!) I expect it will change again in a couple of years. I don't think my DS would have been happy with just milk until 6 months, but then again, I suppose he wouldn't of known any different! I think 6 months is quite late just to be on milk though, but I suppose if that's what the experts say!

Same as the sleeping position for a baby - that has changed over the years also.

That's true. We introduced solids at 4 months to my eldest, as per the guidelines then. However, we waited until after 6 months with my youngest because the guidelines now recommend this.

It's silly to say that because the guidelines have changed over the course of years, they aren't important. They are based on the best evidence the professionals have at the time, and as time goes on and more research is carried out our knowledge of what is safest improves. They may change again, but it's better to do your best with the knowledge you have at the time.

The sleeping advice is a good example - it used to be that babies were put to sleep on their fronts. Then research showed that babies sleeping on their backs were safer and the advice changed. A contriibuting factor in the falling rate of SIDS, perhaps?

I weaned my youngest at just over 3 months. He was a very hungry baby. Breast milk didn't fill him up, formula didn't fill him up, so I started giving him baby food and he settled. Sometimes a little common sense is better than rule books ;)
Here I go again on my own....

I am sure my DD owes her existence to mashed bananas!
I heard someone I vaguely know say recently that food in jars was better for babies OMG how can people still think this? This was at a sure start venue so clearly their message is not getting through! My kids ate dried fruit when they were old enough, instead of sweets and it was mother dearest who gave dd chocolate for the 1st time :(

DD's other granny was a midwife LONG LONG ago and they used to give premature babies a spoonful of brandy and she used to breastfeed babies herself rather than wake the mothers at night, or if they found it troublesome !

Both my twins were given someone elses colostrum as I was too ill when they were born. I still find that a bit difficult as it should have been me. However I was unable to breast feed so at least they had thje important stuff when they were born.

It did used to annoy me though when I was finally able to express some when I struggled to SCBU with the 2ml that I had stuggled to get to find out they had been fed formula five minutes earlier when they had phoned me to wake me up to bring some down!

I can understaqn the old way midwives etc did work, they were doing what they thought was right all those years ago to give babies best chance, thats why they had wet nurses so many years ago!

Some things have changed for better some have made certain nurses/ midwives/ health visitors power crazy!

I had to laugh when I had number 3: midwife told me to avoid "shark, tuna and marlin". I was absolutely distraught as I had a freezer full of marlin:p :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Actually I agree that knowledge changes, but I do think you need a common sense approach as well. My youngest was born when weaning was put to 6 months but he was way bigger than my first, who was also big and weaned at 11 weeks. I held off to about 14 or 15 weeks but simply had to wean him as he was in need of more!

  • i craved marlin! so unfair :rotfl:

depending on what other ingredients were in the dessert it may have been okay - will give her tummy ache and some horrible nappies but won't actually harm her. poor thing having a sore tummy, and poor you not getting enough sleep!!

my eldest is ten and i remember we were told to give something high in sugar as a cure for constipation! nowadays you'd be told to give extra water. lots of people gave their babies sugar water and it didn't harm them, it made them poo though!

when i had the eldest we were told to wean at 12 weeks and my health visitor gave me loads of stick because my baby wasn't ready until 6 months. this time around my baby wanted weaning at exactly 6 months but the advice had changed so the health visitor wasn't nagging at me :D some babies don't need weaning before 6 months and it irritates me when other mums get critical. even though advice has changed to 6 months i never met another mum who waited until then. my sister had a baby last year and he was on 3 full meals per day with pudding by 12 weeks old - he has an enormous appetite. he probably had some sugary stuff then and it didn't harm him.

    hope she's okay now.

All babies are different and I think we should put our faith in our own maternal instincts more often. I'm not suggesting ignoring medical advice, I think that you should read all the available research, but use this as a starting point, rather than a hard and fast rule, and use it alongside your own common sense.

If you have a very hungry baby who is 5 and a half months old, and you know in your heart that the time is right to start weaning, you are probably right....on the other hand, if you really feel baby isn't ready until 6 months, or 6 and a half months, as a Mother, you are best placed to make this decision.

I was so stressed out with my first baby, worrying if he wasn't developing exactly how the books said he would, and guess what.....he's fine! I'm definitely going to be a more laid back Mum this time around. :)

PS: Why do you always want what you can't have??? As soon as I've had the baby and finished breast feeding, I'm going to stuff myself silly on marlin, brie, peanuts, pate and ALCOHOL! :rotfl:

  • i think that some of the advice is based on it being bad for a child to have such-and-such 3 times a day every day but having a small amount occasionally won't do any harm.

what's wrong with chocolate anyway? is it worse than formula, or is it just that some babies who have been breastfed might have a cows milk protein allergy that hasn't been diagnosed because they haven't had any cows milk so far? (genuine question - i don't know much about chocolate because both my children are lactose intolerant).

TBH though when you see the carp that some people give thier kids you wonder if jars are better sometimes!!

Back to the point i weaned my 1st at 4months i think but with my 2nd left it till he was at least 6 months mainly because he just wasn't a 'hungry' baby and was quite happy with milk up until then.

  • This is the truth and the whole truth, I tell no lie!

I overheard a Mum to her daughter, "Don't eat all you f*****g apple, or you'll spoil yer chips" As she smoked her ciggie and other LO drank coke from his bottle!
