Motor accident

Last week i rear ended a car exiting a car park was only travelling slow and it was a slight bump we both got out inspected the cars and decided there was no damage exchanged details and drove off, now over a week later i received a phone call from him telling me that he has found a crack in his bumper and a big dint, which he is claiming that he didn't notice this at the time because he car was dirty, he wants my insurance details so he can make a claim, i've told him that i wont be giving my details as after 7 days anything could of happened to his car, he inspected his car and said there was no damage, hes also told me that he will be going to the police if i do not give my details.
Any advice would be appreciated as i don't know what to do.

If he phones you again tell him to stop harassing you and go through his insurance company. His insurer will notify yours and pay out all or part of the cost depending on what you say.

You need to notify your insurance company.

Next time you have any sort of accident get your phone out and take good pictures of the car and get the name, telephone number and address details of any witnesses.

Even then this won't guarantee your insurance won't pay out the claim as most will do as it's cheaper to pay the claim then go to court. There is also on his part no guarantee your insurer won't dispute what happened and only pay 50%.

If he is only insured third party then he has to sue you. When you get the court papers you give them to your insurance company.

The reason he doesn't want to go through his insurer is because it is a claim and lots place restrictions on how you get it fixed if it's not minor damage, however if he was genuine about the amount of damage he would do.

Give him your details. He has six years to claim for any damage, so 7 days is of no consequence.

Report the incident to your insurer ASAP.

Pass on any correspondence unanswered to your insurer to deal with.

Not so.

He could ask you to pay his costs.

He could claim for them off your insurer.

Only if both avenues were ignored would going to court be the way forward for him.

Im sorry but when i got home i checked my car for bumps and scrapes and nothing, he has told me that he has only just noticed the crease in his bumper today, anything could of hit him in the last 7 days if he wants to go through insurance then he should just tell his and they can deal with mine.
I asked him how much it would cost and he don't know.
I just feel that there is something not right.

Can you prove there was no damage to his car?

If you are sorry for causing the accident, can't understand why you won't co-operate!

Never agree "no damage done" at the scene of an accident!

You need to have your car properly inspected (rear ending can cause damage that is not immediately obvious).

In this case you know you hit him, so just co-operate - make sure your insurer knows about your concern. Failure to co-operate could lead to more trouble (maybe police knocking at your door regarding your insurance) - why invite more trouble?

Highly unlikely police will get involved as no one was injured, chances are he wants ins details for a PI claim.
