TheLink Cashback Scam Warning!!!!!!

I took out a contract last year (connection date was the 18th of September) for a cashback deal with TheLink. I was just checking the details as I am getting close to my first application (there are 3 applications at 6,9 and 12 months) so I called the link cashback office to confirm my thoughts on how it works. The cashback from says that I have to send "A copy of my till receipt and 1st and 6th airtime bill". As the phone was connected late in september, we didn't recieve a bill until the 10th of october, and that bill includes the portion of line rental we have already used, and an advance payment for the next month's line rental. All standard stuff, as to be expected.

*NOW FOR THE STING*

thelink say to me that as i connected it in september i need to send in septembers bill, but I do not have a bill for september. Now they are insistent about this, and they say that if I send in my october bill they will just send me a rejection letter. When I say I have no bill for september, they say send in my paperwork I recieved from orange when I connected the phone. But I didn't recieve any paperwork. What do I do? The cashback form clearly states 1st and 6th airtime bills, so they are the only things I have been avidly collecting and protecting.

What do I do people? The cashback is 99 quid!!

phone orange mate as you should have gotten some paperwork through the post from them, maybe got lost in the post
  • I already have phoned orange. They say that the first bill I recieved was on the 10th of october. That is my first airtime bill, as per the terms of thelink cashback. I am surely not the first person to have this problem with thelink?

Does the October bill show that it covers the period from the date on the till receipt? If so, then I'd say that you will be fine.

If The Link refuse you they wouldn't have a leg to stand on in court as your billing details would prove that it was the first such bill (by virtue of the fact that it includes line rental chares from the date on your till receipt - ergo, no bill could have preceded it).

From previous experience, I wouldn't expect The Link to muck you around. This could simply be a misunderstanding between yourself and the particular oik that was manning the phone when you rang. From experience I often find that, no matter which company I am ringing, I know far more than the person who is supposed to answer my questions. I find that this is a common complaint these days.

Yes, phone up the link until you find someone who understands. Then write them a letter saying that you have spoken to their customer services and they agreed that it would be paid.

Be gracious and thank them graciously for their reasonableness in this.

They will send you a cheque.
  • Thanks Reestit and Ed, I hope you are right. I did try ringing back and after about an hour trying to get through (they only let you hold for 2 1/2 mins then cut you off so you have to redial) I got through and ended up speaking to the same CS op! I wonder if they are just a small outfit or something. Anyway, I asked her if I could speak to her manager, and she said that he was busy but would call me back on monday, so we will have to see what happens. Will post back on here when I know something.

    Hey,
I agree with the other MSE PEEPS just be patient. your first orange bill will show the rental for both months. Orange and others usually do this and combine the part of the first month with the next. As one poster said.....your bill will show the rental for sep. just highlight that and send it in.

I'd advise you just send your 1st and the 6th bill with recorded delivery, forget the rest and wait for a month and you'll receive your CB. Don't take stress with link and don't bother calling them as they'll take you round in circles. Best thing, make sure you send your 1st bill (Oct) and the 6th Bill.

    Good luck
  • Just a quick update- I had no phone call on monday as predicted, so am going to assume by their lack of callback that we are correct in our assumptions that they need the first and sixth bill, and will send all by rec del and see what happens. If they don't pay up then that will be another Chequeback operator to avoid in the future.

    Thanks all.

I wholeheartedly agree, it ironically seems telecommunications companies seem to be the worst offenders
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • I am also on a cashback deal with the link and to date they have (eventually) sent me each quarters cheque. The people on customer services however are poor. My last cheque had not arrived after five weeks so I rang to chase. Luckily I had sent the invoices etc by recorded delivery. The girl on cs said that they had received my documents (they searched by recorded delivery number) on 28th December and therefore I would not receive my payment until the end of February. When I pointed out that this was a long time she said "the terms clearly state you should allow 28 days". I had to ask her to count with me twice before she realised that their deadline had been the end of January, and not February. No apology - "we are running a bit slow at the moment".

    Two lessons:-

    1. Recorded delivery is a must.
    2. Follow up call around the 28 day mark.

I would also suggest sending copies or at least keeping copies in case of any dispute.
