Are Talk Talk as bad as some people say?

I know that broadband connections are affected by how close you are to exchanges. I was looking at changing to Talk Talk as they are so cheap, but loads of people on here say their Broadband connections speeds etc are dreadful. Does anyone know if this is in general, or are those people just further from the local exchanges? Be grateful for help as just wanting cheaper Broadband and Line rental as Virgin Media who we are with seem extortionate. Thanks.

I've been with TalkTalk (LLU) on their plus service for a year and a half now and very happy with the service. I get line speeds of 18 meg 24/7, pings of 15-20 sec and online videos load stutter free. The reason why they have such a poor reputation is simply because of their poor telephone support. However their web support is very good and issues usually get resolved very quickly.
  • I've been with talk talk for several years and as far as the internet speeds and phone call service it's very good and I have no isusues. I also had their TV service for a year and that was great too.

However, I find them to be quite slippery in dealing with them on the phone and I have had a few billing issues which took a lot of effort to sort out. I was charged for two different contracts for a year for instance and then only partially refunded so I am always very careful about checking bills etc.

If you are on VM cable service (as opposed to Virgin National) then you can't switch anyway-for any ADSL broadband service you will first need a BT-based line. You cannot run any other broadband provider on a cable connection. Which service are you on?
Most of the complaints about TT relates to their dire CS. When your TT service works it will be fine. When it doesn't, you 'll find out why they are so cheap.
And TT is only cheap if it is available LLU on your exchange. Do an exchange search on www.samknows.com and see what your other LLU options are.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It's best not to risk finding out first hand why that is.

Well,I had their salesmen knock at the door a few days ago.."You may have noticed that we've been doing work on your telephone exchange" started the sales pitch without him telling me who he was from..."Er no,YOU have'nt,BT Openreach have been installing FTTC" says I.."You're from Skye Marketing on behalf of Talk Talk aren't you?"....says I..."Er.......yes" he says... then proceeds to tell me things that are'nt true in relation to my existing BBand & what they can offer...."Sorry,I'll wait for BE FTTC,Bye"...says I..

Do you have any neghbours who aren't with Virgin as they could give you some indication of what sort of line speed you may get with Talk Talk (or any other supplier for that matter). Either way, you aren't going to get the mega speeds that Virgin can offer.

https://www.samknows.com may also provide you with some indication of speeds in your area.

I'm with Talk Talk and have the standard cheap phone/broadband LLU offering. I've been with them for over 3 years and the only outage was caused by Openreach engineers at the local exchange. I'm quite a distance from the exchange and only get 3 m/b download and 0.5 m/b upload, but at least it's consistant.
  • I live fifteen mins away from the exchange in my area, have been with talktalk seven years and have been happy with the service, until this past week, its been terrible if I do managed to get a connection it keeps dropping and my computer freezes...........too many new customers? unable to cope?if it doesn't get any better I shall leave them when my contract is up.I have tried to get on the talktalk forum this morning but,as soon as I get there the connection drops.

I`ve been with TalkTalk for 4 years and have never had any problems about anything.
Download speed is 14meg, I`m within a mile of the exchange which is LLU.

New customers get free connection, free wifi modem, evenings and weekend free calls on the Essentials package, currently £3-25 a month and if you pay your line rental up front at £114, it works out at £9-50 a month.
    Total monthly cost £12-75.

Are any of your neighbours with TT, so you could ask about the speed.
As been mentioned search samknows to see if your exchange is LLU and find out how far away you are from it.

I have been with talk talk now for a couple of months no issues at all speed has gone up from 8mb with BT to about 14 mb now,the bills have been correct..I am saving a fortune and unlike with BT dont feel im being ripped off every month.I also took advantage of the £114 line rental upfront deal so all im paying is £3.25 a month for the broadband.I just couldnt afford BT any more

I've had no real problems, at least so far.

The service, both voice and internet, was connected on the due date, 14 days (the minimum, due to credit legislation) after the order.

The e-mail access needed to be "poked with a stick" to get it working, but one phone call got it sorted.

I may or may not be getting blisteringly past speeds: it's fast enough for e-mails, online banking, MSE and !!!!!!! I seem to be keeping within my 40GB limit as well.

There was a bit of confusion about how my payment for the advance line rental was accounted. Actually, it was in my favour: they showed both my payment and the rental credit. Again, that has been sorted.

And my connection charge wasn't refunded until the third bill, not the first or second one, as I was (verbally) promised. At least I wasn't suddenly told that I wasn't due a refund, when I rang to chase this up.

I do have my doubts about the accuracy of their billed call durations, but this is from one call (shown as 45 minutes 00 seconds (suspicious or a 1/60 chance?) and I can't recall talking for that long). However, from my experience in BT Accounts, I know that there is going to be a discrepancy with any timings I could provide. And I don't really want to have to log every chargeable call.

But, if they do really mess anything up in the future, I shan't hesitate to pull their corporate arm off and hit them with the wet end. :)

It's my pension provider's turn first.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
