Slow internet - what do I check for ?

I've posted before about problems with my laptop, but I think the current situation is internet/speed/ router related.

As hinted at above, my laptop has become slow, but last night it was impossible. Wouldn't load sites at all, couldn't open e-mails. I thought it was finally knackered, a bit sudden (it was ok in the morning) but assumed it was my lappy's problem. Just spoke to my O/H and mentioned it, and he said his was exactly the same last night - slow and wouldn't load sites. His is under four months old, hardly used and hasn't had a problem before. He thought it might be the router, to switch it off and on ? Btw mine is currently slower than normal but not impossible like last night.

ISP is the Post Office (using BT ??) and router is maybe three years old.

So what do I need to do to establish the problem ?
- switch router off and on ?
- Is there some way/site that can test the speed we're getting?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Can you perform a speed check please on https://www.speedtest.net

Have you used CCleaner and performed a thorough cleanout?

    speedtest results :
    ping 90ms
    download speed 0.13mbps
    upload speed 0.16mbps

CCleaner used daily (again this morning). Also ran malwarebytes & hijackthis - nothing found. In fact O/H said he also scanned his last night in case his lappy had a problem, nothing found.

    Many Thanks.

High ping and crap speed. I'd call Post Office. Probably an exchange issue

if you live where i live you wouldnt have gone out last night because it was so cold your nose would have fallen off:D
so it might just be a case that everyone and his dog stayed in last night and interneted all night thus slowing down your bt line
even this site crashed last night because of the cold

True, but these are the current stats. So the problem is on-going. Just looked at the Post Office website and they say ''fast download speeds up to 8Mbps broadband ''

Ok, 'up-to' is a blanket get-out, but assuming the speedtest is correct, I'm getting under 1 mbps which is pretty rubbish and can't be right ?

I'm on Plusnet (owned by BT) and here is Staffs had similar problems last night with general speed and some websites taking ages to load pages. All back to normal now. I agree weather overload seems likely culprit.

Is your phone line noisy? Plusnet had to arrange for BT Openworld to visit me recently as my broadband was very slow sometimes. During phone calls it sounded as though someone was munching through a bag of crisps. Rewiring from the outside terminal and a new BT Openreach main socket has cured all my phone and broadband problems. I'm now consistently connecting at 3.2Mbps which is about the max quoted at 3 miles from the local exchange. I was struggling to get 0.5Mbps with the noisy line before.

Just got off the phone with the Post Office. They've said there's nothing wrong with anything their end. I've been told to change/buy a new micro filter for the router. Plug it into the wall ?? Then call back, they'll do five speed tests over a 24 hour period and if the problem persists send it to the second line support team.

So if I understand this correctly they are saying :
    - It's a micro-filter (router) problem ........... if not
    - It's an 'equiptment' problem hence tests ......... if not
    - Something else hence goes to second line support.

    Does this sound right ?
