People who bully and lie deserve no manners whether part of their job or not and if they are going to do this on my own property then they will get whatever response I choose to use at the time. On the premise of treating people the way you would like to be treated yourself, I think this is inordinately suitable in the circumstances.

I love the German Shepherd one. Will use that next time.

My point is that the person that has came round might not lie or be bullying people. How would you know what they are going to do if you close the door before letting them speak?

they usually try and say they are not trying to sell me anything and end up being pointenly told if they are not trying to sell me something why the hell are they there - and if I did not want to buy something why would I be interested in what they want to sell......................either that or pretend I cannot speakky the lanuage.............depending on my mood.

I do not say a single rude word, I do not swear or shout in anyway. Its a waste of their time and mine in allowing them to speak and I make a point of getting to the point!

I know why they are at the door and I am not interested. Why faff around with it????

I do exactly the same with the old ladies who carry Watchtower - I know why they are there and am not interested.

The problem is what they are doing is an inherent nuisance to the majority of people. I think these people have to accept that they have relinquished their right to polite conversation when they turn themselves into human junk-mail.

The majority of people choosing to change supplier use the doorstep channel. The sales agents encourage people to think about changes in the market and not to become complacent which many people have throughout rising prices etc.

Since 2003 there has been a 90% decrease in complaints from direct selling and more than half the population have changed supplier.

Providing the agent is doing their job properly, encouraging people to think about saving money is fine by me.

Fair enough if you do not wish to engage in a conversation but again, manners cost nothing.

If you haven't changed from BG then you will be listed as someone yet to change so you will get constant calls untill you change, I'm afraid. Unfortunately even if you HAVE changed, some utilities companies work from old data. It costs money to buy 'Up to date' data sheets.

    Anyway.

I used to live in an area where we rarely got door to door salesmen. but i ended up as a very successful d2d myself. Rarely turned away and was welcomed by most, even in areas that were saturated with callers.

Funny thing was the Housewives (usually) used to tell me how fed up they were with all of the calls that they got and they were telling ME, usually over a welcome cuppa or while they were signing up.

Anyway, One day I moved house and gave up that job.

Boy, did I get the !!!!! with D2D callers.

One after the other some days. I never knew what effect I'd had on people and wonder to this day, how some of them - not all - Kept a civil tongue in their heads.

Must say though that I always had a good larf with my householders but the ones that I had call on me could hardly manage a two word conversation.

And how they expect to get any business dressed the way that they do, beats me.

Oh! And BTW I used to sell utilities too, and it's amazing how stubborn/ignorant some people can be when they don't listen.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

Really? I'm surprised by that. Do you have any figures?

The problem is, from bitter experience, I know that is not the case. You simply cannot end a conversation politely with some of these people: you have to close the door on them or wait until they have exhausted their entire salespitch at a great cost of time. I always try the "Sorry, not interested" line first, but few take that as a signal to stop, so I end up rather rudely closing the door on them mid-sentence. Is that bad manners on my part, or theirs?

I am registered with the MPS and TPS. If only there were a "DPS" that I could sign up to in order to register not to receive visits from doorstep salespeople, eh. ;)

Research by the OFT reckon that doorstep selling is worth £1.2bn to the industry every year.

I have 8 years experience with 2 major suppliers and this channel was the most successful by far with them.

Both of these suppliers are very strict on only approaching customers who had not asked to be excluded from the advisor walklists.

It is possible to contact the companies coming round and ask to be excluded from any further calls, both by doorstep and telephone.

Sales agents these days are constantly audited and assessed to ensure that miselling does not take place. Every sales agent is Energysure accredited which means that if they lose their job through mis-selling they are unable to work for any other supplier as they all use the Energysure database.

They are assessed through back checks which means that both customers who have signed up and those who didn`t are contacted to make sure that they are happy in the way that they were approached and were given the correct information.
