Over 50 but well under 60 - any discounts/concessions etc?

I'm 50 and while I'm pretty happy on the whole, I'm financially more constrained than I've ever been. No complaints, it's just the way it is - a result of having reached the point where I no longer receive any child-related benefits but am still running a small family home as a lone parent and will have to continue to do so for some years to come, while trying to help out my younger child (at university) when I can, and living on a fairly low salary.

Understandably most concessions relate to those aged 60+ (I've looked at those advertised on MSE) but I wondered if anyone had come across any aimed at those 50+?

I doubt much will have changed since this was last discussed.

There are some savings accounts available to the over-50s but generally they seem to pay less than the best rates available to everyone elsewhere.

Here are examples of over-55s accounts that pays rubbish rates.

  • Thanks for that - I hadn't seen the previous thread (the difficulty being how to word a search on this subject). Doesn't look as if there's much out there, although I did claim my free (one copy) Saga magazine a while ago! It's actually very good - had read copies here and there in waiting rooms before. Unfortunately while 50 is generally Saga's minimum age, their products are way above my budget, so that won't help me.

Oh well, roll on 60;) ... though I certainly won't be able to retire until my late sixties and I bet they've pulled the free travel (which I'd absolutely love and could benefit so much from) long before then.:(

Your free bus pass, apply now so it is ready to use next week.

B+Q discount card, many sports events and concerts all apply at 60.

Lots of other discounts if you look for the relevant thread on this forum.

I'd guess scotsbob is a resident of Scotland. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland passes are still issued at age sixty. English National Concession Travel Scheme passes are issued to both men and women when they reach the current women's state pension age which changes each month.

Sometimes discounts/concessions can crop up unexpectedly. I was in one of my local health food shops a few months ago, and while paying at the till, the sales assistant noticed my bus pass and "That comes to £X with your 10% discount for being an OAP" (bus pass was taken as proof), which was a nice surprise!!! So, it's worth asking in any shops that you regularly use, 'cos like this shop, there were no notices up about this perk!!

    Happy hunting.

Glad this was on the strength of the bus pass! - was beginning to fear someone might say it to me just looking at me, which would rather cancel out the boost I'd get from the discount!:rotfl:
