Firefox 10 Vs Internet Explorer 9

I know this has probably been done to death but I have just started using Firefox. I've been having problems with IE 9 ever since I downloaded it. Tried perservering with it but have become fed with crashes. Firefox on the other hand seems very stable. Haven't had any messages saying Firefox isn't responding etc. So which do you think is the better browser and why?

  • Google Chrome. Most secure browser of them all.
  • Firefox over recent updates (more updates than hot dinners) has been awful (for me) still on 9 but takes ages to get anywhere (not responding etc) so I now also use google chrome.

The Op asked for opinions about Firefox and IE, why post about chrome?

Back on topic, I prefer Firefox to IE because
    • Firefox doesn't crash
    • It doesn't use ActiveX to install stuff without me knowing
    • Since using Firefox my virus detection rates have plummeted to practically zero
    • Firefox has such useful add-ons such as:
Adblock plus gets rid of adverts
Flashblock lets me choose which flash objects to view
British English dictionary for on-line real time spell checking
    • Firefox has form completion built-in
    • Firefox remembers my not-very-important passwords for me built-in of course.
    • and the magic search box.
    • IE is always playing catch-up with Firefox

I like google Chrome but the really old PC I'm typing this on doesn't have much memory and kept asking me to shut applications. Since I switched to Firefox I've not had any messages like that.

You are very lucky, the firefox/mozilla forums are full of many users that are having a hard time some even refuse to use any firefox higher numbered that 3.1, the reasons given vary from google, add ons etc there must be good reasons for so many updated versions in such a short time but I have no idea why mine has began to play up.after many many years, started with 5 or was it 4, when it did not get along with Talk Talk or the other way around.

Oh by the way if its my thread you are talking about I was giving my opinion on firefox and also giving another option, there are others.

As distinct from Internet Explorer which gets updated once per month on the second Tuesday.:)

I can only speak from my experience of Firefox which has been no problem, but YMMV as they say:(

The good thing is that we now have a choice of good browsers, and it is so easy to install and try them alongside each other.

Because in general, i find people like to ignore the actual question at hand & instead they like to push what they use on to everyone else.

If you ask for Budweiser or Stella & someone drinks Carling, they'll bang on all day long about how great Carling is even though you're not interested. Yes it may be the best thing for you ... but nobody cares.

Folk just don't get it though.

I personally prefer FireFox. Much better all round than IE. Faster i find too.
    I hate Chrome.

You could also look at Palemoon which runs most Firefox add ons, though you could have it set up with different add ons for different sites etc

" Why settle for a basic build of your Firefox browser on Windows Operating Systems when you can have one that is specifically made for getting the most out of your system? Mozilla does not provide optimized browser packages for Windows, meaning you may be losing speed and efficiency when you use your browser; and truth be told, most people use their browsers all the time! That needs to change, so, here is the Pale Moon project: Custom-built and optimized Firefox-based browsers for Windows Operating Systems. Make sure to get the most speed and efficiency out of your browser "

Firefox was great when it came out as a lightweight alternative to Mozilla... but in the last year or so we've jumped from version 3.5 to 10, and with every release Firefox seems to get less and less stable. It's fine with all the add-ons disabled, so maybe it's the add-on coders rather than the FF dev team at fault, but it's still annoying.

Having said that, I'm not going to switch browsers because the Firefox interface is pretty well laid-out and I couldn't live without the add-ons (even if they do cause problems sometimes).

Chrome is fine, but has a rubbish UI, far fewer decent add-ons, and can hardly be trusted in term of security/privacy when Google own it! It copes better with web pages that are heavier on system resources, though. Chromium (rather than Chrome) would probably be a better bet for most people as it's open source is probably better in terms of trustworthiness...

Internet Explorer as such a tragic history of poor programming, awful security (e.g. in ActiveX), and a complete disregard for standards that I would never think to use it. I don't think Microsoft can really undo all the bad publicity it's had. Also, the farce that Microsoft underwent to "prove" that it was a fundamental part of the OS to worm their way out of anti-trust lawsuits in the US doesn't exactly demonstrate that they have ANY interest in what is best for the user -- their web browser has always sought to manipulate users and standards.

Do they? Yelling at Microsoft Might be Valiant...?
