I had a thought the other night (yes, careful!)
I was born and raised in Stoke, the Potteries. My Mother was head lithographer with a china company. As a child my Mum used to bring home the litho transfers that were put onto china before it was fired. They came on a sheet so you could cut out the bits you wanted, then when you wet them they slid off the sheet and you positioned them onto the white ware. They would dry and then be fired into place by a kiln. I'd play for hours decorating my own mugs etc.
Its occurred to me that these lithos are probably almost exactly the same as the water transfers currently sold for nails and that when dry a topcoat of nail polish would seal them. It also occurs to me that these will probably be very very cheap to buy...
Obviously they will mostly be floral type things, but the idea of a set of willow pattern nails is currently filling me with joy. I'm asking around friends who are still in the industry to see if I can get hold of any old lithos to try0 -
Painted my nails all with a variety of polishes and finishes ready for experimentation. While they were drying I got everything laid out.
I really enjoy the set up, getting everything just so.. It’s a bit of an event, my favourite part

Settled in for an extended play.
Took off the plastic protective cover and painted off the first block, scraped and stamped. Did not collect any polish. No fear, thought the plate does not like this particular polish.
45 mins later, I have used every single polish I own, changed the scraper to a Credit Card and tried a variety of methods such as faster application, slower application, more polish, less polish. Nada.
As a control I took out the hello kitty plates my mate gave me to cut my teeth on. Worked fine.
I think the cut groove is to shallow and as such it’s not reservoir deep enough to hold adequate polish to transmit the design.
Gutted. Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...0 -

Thats how I felt last night when mine didn't go right!! Will have to try again tonight on my manky nails and when I've got it down, I'll reapply from scratch.
Where did you get your plate from? Can you return it?0 -

Perhaps there's a difficult-to-see thin sheet of plastic film on the plate that needs to be peeled off?Freddie Starr Ate My Signature
