Well it *sounds* simple enough but I fear I can make it all a into rather a mess!
I tried masking tape diagonally to do stamps that were too small for my whole nails and ended up trying to paint my left hand with my right fingers all half stuck together - I think taping one hand at a time might be more sensible? It was all quite funny and I did get there in the end. If I knew how I'd post a picture.

I know someone has explained before but if someone would do it again please? Copying and pasting a photo just made the forum blow up on me.

Oh and the striping tape - do you put it on then cut it or do you have to cut it to the right length then stick it on? I shall probably give in and get some, even thought I have a vision of me with all my fingers stuck together having to wait for the other half to come home to rescue me ;)

I'm no expert at posting photos, so there may well be an easier way to do it but I upload my photos to flickr, then click on "share" (in flickr), copy the HTML/BBCode, click on "insert image" on MSE, then paste the HTML/BBCode.

Re the masking tape, I wouldn't even attempt to do both hands at once, I'm far too clumsy. I usually do one or two nails at a time. I find I get a cleaner line if I remove the tape quite quickly, so I'd rather do it that way anyway.

Re the striping tape, I leave it on the roll as that gives me something to hold. Put it in place then cut it. You need to cut the tape just slightly shorter than the edge of the nail. If it overhangs the nail it will lift, no matter how thick a topcoat you put over it.

Hi backhoe, welcome to the group!

I'd paint it on, but I don't think it'd look good on its own and I'm leaving my nails bare except for hardener at the moment to strengthen them. Can't get a picture to do it justice really :o

    Hi all,
I hope you don't mind me joining you.

I used to love doing my nails years ago but it all stopped when bouncing babies started to arrive!!!

Am really getting back into it now but I really dont know where to start. Its changed sooo much since my day (how old does that make me sound. lol)

Have been having a look through this thread and all your nails look amazing. Can anyone give me an idea of where to start with the nail art stuff, good quality varnish etc (hopefully Dh wont mind the ebay bill too much!!) Am going to give a crackle glaze a go tonight and see what happens.

    Thanks in advance

I don't know where to start with recommending varnishes, there are so many out there that I love. For decent quality and a reasonable price, Barry M seems to be universally popular. Great range of colours as well.

For nail art, watch some videos on Youtube to get an idea of what you'd like to try. Ebay is usually the best place to buy stuff. Stamping is fairly easy, you could start with that.

Good luck with the crackle :)
  • Well I tried water decals last night and you are right they are dead easy. Although a little fiddly. Some got stuck together and had to be binned but otherwise not too bad for a first go!
