Anyone who says 'would you like....' normally gets a no thank you before they finish. I am an adult and am capable of deciding what i want, i don't need suggestions.
Normally ends up with me carrying loads of shopping back to the car without a carrier though
P.s. never bought a choc at WH Smith, i did by a birthday card there once for £4.89 since then ive not been back.
well the other day i got a free bottle of water from WH smith in the Edinburgh Royal Informary
seemingly someone didnt want thei free bottle, and I was buying a bottle
so perhaps you should let them finish

Serves you right for being so rude doesn't it. You do realise that the member of staff has been told to try and sell those things, right? If they don't ask they get in trouble. So all it takes is a few seconds of politeness from you - a nice smile and a no thanks is all that is required - not a bad tempered interruption.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I bought my first computers a ZX81 and a ZX Spectrum in Smiths.
I used to get my computer games in WHsmith in the 1980's for the ZX81 and Spectrum.
Generally I used to go in for magazines from the late 80's and through the 90's, but now I only go in a few times a year, usually at a railway station.
My local one is now the Post Office in the town, so more people are going in.
As I said on another thread about Smiths, that is a good move for them, as people are queing and looking around no doubt and being tempted to buy.
As for people going on about going into Tesco's etc to buy even newspapers, sadly that is also one of the reasons why so many high street stores are struggling.
Eventually there will just be 3 or 4 stores across the country for everything, unless you order online. I'd rather pay 5p more for some chocolate and slow down the process of that happening.0 -
I have never bought any chocolate from Whsmith. I don't tend to shop there very often nowadays. The 2 computer magazines I read I subscribe to. I can get books cheaper from Asda and The works. I don't think they even sell music and DVD's anymore (too much online competition).
Like previous posters have said, if I want chocolate then I'm adult enough to pick it up, I don't need prompting. Superdrug are a pain for asking if you want mobile top ups (no I have a contract) or stamps (I pick them up from Asda as and when I need to).
Someone mentioned Woolworths and I remember when they first starting charging for bags and a woman in front of me was arguing with the assistant about being charged for a little piddly bag for a greetings card :rotfl:
I used to take my own bag(s) and you could see the stern look on the assistant face when I said I didn't want to pay for a bag so I had got my own. On one of these occasions I bought a pair of PE pumps for my daughter, the assistant said "would you like a receipt?", the look on her face was priceless when I replied with "yes please, do you charge for that as well?"
I definitely agree that Whsmith will eventually go the same way as Woolies.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £10,153.440 -

I think the way the public do their shopping is changing. Since the birth of consumerism it's been about the high street, now people are preferring to use supermarkets and the Internet because it's easier and cheaper.
If that's what the public wants the high street should adapt for that change, even if that means reducing the number of shops.0
