I like Smiths as it's the only place you can see that range of magazines. That's about their only plus point for me these days.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -

exactly and right there is the reason they still going you can get magazines there you can't get anywhere else0 -
They are the ONLY shop in my local high street to not open Sundays-only reason anyone round here goes in there is to use the Post Office in there.
I needed some file dividers yesterday-It didn't even occur to me to look in there for them -yet not so long ago it was the first stop for stationary.
I won't bother using them at airports as they are over-priced and the queues are endless -and use them once in a blue moon traveling through London termini.
At their present rate they have no future.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
Yeah I used to work there back in 2007 and we had to ask every customer if they wanted some chocolate. I think in this case it was a Terrys Chocolate Orange. Used to have the boss come round every so often and scold us if we hadn't gotten rid of any! I hardly ever asked though - it's there, clear as day. If a customer wanted it, they'd pick it up.
We were also told that the person who sold the most would get a free chocolate orange themselves. Needless to say, I never got the free chocolate orange :rotfl:0 -
I went in for a bar of choc, a wispa was 80p. I was totally shocked and it showed. The assistant pointed me to the special offer cadburys for a £1 and suggested i but that instead which i did.
Would make sure i looked at the prices before i bought again.0 -
Yep - and it seems there's a level of store manager discretion in stocking what sells.Alex-Riley. wrote: »exactly and right there is the reason they still going you can get magazines there you can't get anywhere else
There's a branch on my way home from work which is open to 7pm and that's handy now and then. I'm most likely to be looking for birthday cards or paper and I might impulsively buy a mag that doesn't appear in supermarkets. They have the chocolate offers now and then but given that they are all of 100yds from Asda I suspect they don't get many takers.I need to think of something new here...0 -
Went in to get a magazine, Got to the checkout. I said right away, All i want is the magazine, I dont want stamps, I dont need phone topup, i hate chocolate and i dont gamble. The lady was lost for words.0

Our WHSmith is really naff. For some reason I remember it being quite a posh shop when I was a kid but it seems to have gone downhill.
We had a wonderful Borders shop with an amazing selection of magazines and a Starbucks. It was a million times better than Smith's, so sad they went bust.0 -
I always remember the Woolworths near where I work. There was one member of staff there I used to try and avoid on the till. When buying a bottle of drink, it used to go like this:
MoS: "Can I interest you in any of our chocolates on offer ?"
Me: "No thank you, just the drink"
MoS: "Any phone top-ups, lottery or stamps ?"
Me: "No, just the drink please"
MoS: "We've also got a great deal on the Playstation 3 at the moment"
Me "........
So I'm buying a drink for around £1 and I might impulsively purchase a PS3 ?!?!?!0 -
