Does anyone buy chocolate in WH SMiths?

Every lunchtime 'would you like any half price sweets or chocolate' at the till for items that cost more at "half price" than they do full price elsewhere.

They topped themselves today - the 400g Cadbury's bars on sale for £5.25! :rotfl:

Do they actually sell any of this stuff, do you think? I'm a complete chocoholic and even I've never been that desperate that I'd pay so much over the usual price.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

I'm surprised WHSmith still have stores outside of captive areas such as train stations and airports.

Anyone who says 'would you like....' normally gets a no thank you before they finish. I am an adult and am capable of deciding what i want, i don't need suggestions.

Normally ends up with me carrying loads of shopping back to the car without a carrier though :(

P.s. never bought a choc at WH Smith, i did by a birthday card there once for £4.89 since then ive not been back.

Yes i bought a few bars but purely because they were £1 and i was stood next to them and I wanted some choccy. Im quite amazed they decided to sell bars of chocolate and stuff since its over priced compared to the supermarkets and the pound shops in town.
  • You can tell it's a directive from their head office. I've even had staff members say "Sorry, but I have to ask" after I've said "Not at those prices" !!

I went into Smiths the other day, and decided to use the self-service tills. After I'd finished scanning things through and had got my card out, a message came up which said "Would you like to take advantage of any of our great offers?" and had pictures of various chocolate on it, all of which were arranged on shelves around the till.

Even the machines are at it!

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

I went into a WH Smiths recently and used the self service till, I thought I had got away with not being offered a large bar of Aero. But no, the self service till is programmed to ask you at the end of your purchases. It amused me!

Probably WHSmith are seeing a slump in sales so having high markup on chocolate and then trying to actively sell it to every customer that walks through the door is their last ditch effort to not go the same way as Woolworths.

WHSmith is just another Woolworths, isn't it? I can't think of anything they sell that I wouldn't rather get when doing my weekly shop at Tesco.

I rarely visit smiths anymore, I object to paying money for naff carrier bags and unlike M&$ who (correct me if I'm wrong) first started charging for bags (but donated the money to charity), I don't think smiths do this and I object. I am usually quite good at having a bag on me but if you buy a greeting card, you don't really want it getting crinkled in a bag for life.

That aside, have always seen the chocolate on the tills and been offered it but rarely taken them up on the offer. I also object to the till operator scanning a voucher but then not giving the voucher to you.

Thats about the only time I go there now (if I have a discount voucher) or if there is a craft mag I want that i can't get in my local newsagents. or the book of the week is something I am interested in (not so much now I have my kindle!) :)

My friend is forced to do that on the tills. WHSmith even give then a percent of sales that much be chocolate or sweet. I think it is 8%.

I haven't been in since I put my magazines on subscription and I can't see myself having a reason to go in again. I can get everything I want cheaper elsewhere.

I'm amazed it is still going, the local one was virtually empty last time I went in and that was a Friday lunchtime in late November.
