  • thanks for all the advice. i'm wondering if i should ring head office and put in a complaint that i'm being bullied. another thing she said was, wasnt this the week you asked for as holidays ( which it wasnt) i said no i asked for last week which i could only have 2 days because thats all i had left, i hadnt planned anything and i had no reason why i wanted it off so how can she say that. she's just thinking of anyway she can to accuse me of lying without actually calling me a lier.
  • can i just add that we decide in april what hols we want so i wouldnt of even known that i was going to be pregnant when i booked my holidays.

Is there a HR dept you could talk to about the way you're being treated?
  • personally this is what i would do:

Ignore the manager - Chances are there are things going off in her personal life, and work life, that are making her a cow - You dont mention any past issues (or maybe ive missed it?) so maybe she's just stressing and being a cow?

Ring in every day and state your not well, you wont be coming in that day (Following companies time off policy)

I also, personally, wouldnt leave it up to my OH to ring into work - I know it is stressful speaking to her but all you need to say is "hi, it's XX, I'm not coming into work today, this is the reason why XXX I dont think i will be in the rest of the week but i'll let you know tomorrow... Bye" and hang up. Dont give her a chance to start on you, and if she does try just say something like "I'm not continuing this conversation any more, I've explained I wont be in, I will see how I feel tomorrow" and hang up. If she STILL starts - HR complaint.

Do you HAVE to ring the manager to notify a sick day or is there anyone else you can ring?

What sort of company treats a pregnant woman like this?! It's really made me cross has this thread.

As for telling work...you should tell them when you blumming well want...especially if their are health complications. In my job pregnancy related sickness never counts against you as it couldn't happen to men and it's sexist! : ) Maybe I work for a damn good company but surely all employers have to treat their staff with respect..whether they are happy about having pregnant staff or not.

If you do have a HR department I'd speak with them immediately. Can you put a grievance in about the manager?

Yes but if there is a sick absence procedure in place which requires staff to ring in by, say, 10am on the morning of absence, just telling them when you want is going to get you disciplined!

I agree with everything Mimi has said. Your employer is legally obliged to make sure your health and your baby's is not put at risk - this manager is causing you unnecessary stress treating you in this way. See if you can speak to head office, if they have any sense then they'll sort it out. If you feel you're being treated unfairly I'm sure you could take them to an employment tribunal, and I'm sure they probably won't want that. Congratulations and all the best. x

Apart from the H&S issues, whereby a risk assessment should now have been completed (?) pregnancy related illness is required to be treated differently than normal illness, and cannot be used as a point to discipline or dismiss without being guilty of sexual discrimination.

For this reason it would be foolish not to 'declare' the pregnancy when one is taking time sick because one is offered additional protection when in this more vunerable state.
