Recording from Freeview Radio (BBC Radio 4 Channel 704)

Hello - I'll be very pleased if anyone can point me in the right direction. I have a Sony Digital TV in the bedroom and a Sony DVD Recorder there. I can record BBC Radio 4 programmes on the DVD in the bedroom and play them back later with no difficulty.

In my living room I have a Sony Digital TV and a new Sony Hard Disk Recorder. It looks as if it allows me to choose to record a BBC Radio 4 programme and the little 'red dot' comes up indicating that I have set the programme to record - but the recording never happens. All the TV programmes record with no problem.

Do you think I am doing something wrong or does a Sony Hard Disk Recorder not record Freeview BBC Radio programmes for some reason?

Both televisions run off the one roof aerial. I'll appreciate anyone's help, thank you.

It should record any Freeview channel that you can receive.

  • Thanks, macman, for your very quick response. Since the Hard Disk Recorder definitely is not recording BBC Radio for me do you think there is a fault. (Just a thought - do you think I should ask on the Techie Forum?) I appreciate your comments.

    Thank you. Crimson.

I'd startr with the usual 1st step-do a full retune and see if that helps.
    Can you record R4 manually?

Thanks again, macman. I'm a bit wary about 'tampering' in case I do more harm than good but I have retuned successfully in the past so I'll do that. I've never tried to record anything manually but I should learn how to do it - I could read the instruction manual.

I'll have to log off now but I'll post tomorrow when I've had time to retune and experiment. Your advice is much appreciated, thank you once more.

Retuning is not tampering-it's standard procedure when you get a problem. To record manually you just go to the channel you want and press record.

Is it only R4 that doesn't record ? Have you actually tried to record other radio channels??

IGNORE EDIT - Sorry didn't read first post thoroughly!!!

I apologise for my lack of expertise. I did a digital retune of the TV and it came up with extra channels - 114 this time - but when I selected the HDD it gave sound but no picture or menu. I pressed the reset button on the HDD and I was 'back to normal.'

I then tried to record a BBC Radio4 programme this morning and it did the same as before - looked as if it was set to record, showed up as recording then afterwards there was no sign of the 'recorded' programme on the Title List. Please excuse my ignorance - but, if it is possible, should I have 'retuned' the HDD Recorder? If so I'll need to check how to do that as I have never done it before and I couldn't see 'retune' instructions in the HDD Recorder manual.

Thank you again for your interest and help. (I can do other things OK but technically I seem to be useless.)

You are not recording from the TV's tuner but from the HDD recorder's tuner - so it's that one that needs to be retuned.

Some time back, BBC radio chanels moved multipexes so that's likely to be your problem - you're trying to record what your HDD machine still thinks is Radio 4, but Radio 4 has moved!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thank you very much, Heinz. I'll need to search the HD Recorder manual to see how to retune. I appreciate your explanation - I need to find (by retuning) where Radio 4 has gone.

Please excuse my ignorance but, in the manual I see "Full Rescan" - is that the same as retune? (It's under an "Easy Setup" heading. Is it strange that I can record freeview BBC Radio 4from another TV with a DVD recorder in a different room?

    Many thanks indeed.

Yes. full rescan is the one. It's not strange, your DVD recorder is recording from thre attached TV. Your PVR is recording (or attempting to record) from it's own internal tuners. As Heinz said, if they are incorrectly set, it won't have any signal to record.
