Tricky balance - don't want to discourage genuine new users.

ps - pointless o post on spam threads eg "spam reported". It just moves the spam to top of page again.

    Just hit 'spam'

    and 'report'.
  • With the millions we are making for Lewis he should stop being so tight and get some of his cash out to have people on the look out of this rubbish 24/7/365.

Like the gritters, lots of promises but little action.
  • if new users cant post threads, how do they ask questions? not practical, although it would stop spam, and all new users asking anything, ever.

NOOOO!!! The 'cure' will be worse than the disease.

I would rather have the spam, which is short lived and can ultimately be done by an admin action, than live with enforced thread hijacking, where newbies will drag up random long threads and post a query on the end, so you have to read the whole sorry tale of something irrelevant before realising that there is a newbie asking a disconnected question. And then the OP comes back and we have 2, 3 or more disconnected threads in one thread.

Besides if newbies can only post in existing threads, you know where the spam will go. And even if the spam is deleted, the 'spam reported' posts will bump all the random threads the spammers chose.

    Bad idea all around.

It is getting annoying now. If something is not done people will simply avoid the site. I'm sure it is discouraging viewers from coming back.

Surely there's some algorithm that can analyse the content's of the postings and see that so much of it is the same. I've just spent an hour of my life chasing some nit round reporting his spam. The title of every post was the same.

How many spam reports does it take before MSE realises they've got a spammer?

The most recent set of postings about some footie match all looked the same - but when you examine the 5 or 6 randomly generated letters on the final / bottom line, they differed. Presumably in an attempt to stop threads being identified as the same.

But I agree with you Slinky - the same thought was going through my mind.
