  • Four good sized portions or six ssstttreeetchhhedd portions for us. I would always do chilli with rice though to bulk it out rather than just pitta, it cuts down on the cost and the calories.

I work on the basis that a portion of meat is 4oz/100g

I tend not to make chilli as neither of us are too keen on it, but that size package of mince for bolognese would be stretched to 4 full servings and a few lunches with carrots, oats, bendy veg and extra tomatoes. If not stretching it, I could probably do 2 suppers and two (scanty) lunches with it.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

I would say 4 portions and served with rice rather than pitta bread. :)

1lb of mince would serve four portions here.

Unless I make it into moussaka in which case I tend to have a case of the Jesus and the loaves... I don't know how I do it, but it tends to outgrow my pan while I'm chopping :o

Yes same here. Perhaps cos I'm Freya's mum too :rotfl:

I would get three portions for me out of it :)
But I eat it on its own, no bread, rice etc here.

  • I work on 1lb a mince for 2 adults and 2 older kids. There is always a bit left over though, enough for a pizza topping or 1 persons lunch with a jacket potato. Or if its chilli a toasted sandwich is delicious with the leftovers!

All main meals in our house get served with rice, potatoes or pasta. We also have bread of some sort with most meals whether its pitta, garlic, homemade rolls or naan.

I use grated carrot, onions, peppers etc in my chilli to bulk it out.

I really dont think there is any right or wrong with this. It depends how many you are feeding, what else you have eaten that day etc. In my Mums words my skinny 11 yo has hollow legs and has a huge appetite. If he doesnt get enough for his main meal he is going to be coming back in an hour asking for afters.
  • In this house 500g of mince will serve 8 adult portions. I would pad it out with onions, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, kidney beans, red lentils grated carrotts and a handful of porridge oats. Served with rice.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

I've just cooked up 500g of mince with 2 onions, then split it into two. Added frozen mixed veg to both to pad it out. One added chilli mix which should get about 3 portions as I dont eat it with rice just a blob of yoghurt. Then the other batch has just been turned into a cottage pie which should do 4 or 6 portions depending if I have it on its own or with more veggies.
At least the fish fingers are still frozen, that's what I keep telling myself (Truly Madly Deeply)
