  • I do not get a bill, i am on a monthy fixed price direct debit so do not have reference to any numbers. I can only go by what the electricity supplier tells me as i cannot even confirm my own usage. I have two electric meters (one normal domestic and other used to be called "White Meter" for the storage heaters) and a gas meter. Other suppliers will not accept me as a customer because of the two electric meters. If i could change to the SP may 2013 tariff with restricted hours as though it was economy 7 i would be £20/month better off. If SP won't accept me there is nothing i can do about it.

You MUST get a bill even if it is only online. 'fixed price' is only the unit cost not how much your bill will be. E7 with 2 meters is not uncommon and it is possible you only have one MPAN but with 2 meters. Suppliers should be able to support this. When you find a bill post the top line of you S number and I can check what sort of metering configuration you have.

  • I get an annual statement of what my monthly charge will be for the next year. The statement gives two electricity supply numbers and a gas meter point reference number. Also includes the annual usage brocken down to electic (normal and restricted hours) and gas.

If you post the top line of the 2 S numbers I can give you an ideal if other suppliers can support your metering configuration.
I have a DD tariff but I get quarterly bills (statements) so that I can check the meter readings used and ensure everything is correct, dont you get that?

I have no S numbers nor do i get any quarterly or monthly bill or usage data only the annual statement. Whenever i try to change supplier i get no further than the initial customer support rep, as soon as they enter the address they see that there are two meters and tell me that they cannot accept me as a customer. Two days ago Scottish Power were happy to accept me with the second meter as restricted hours but this morning i phoned to take up the offer and was rejected as usuall.
I have found a very old bill from northern electric that gives S numbers though i am not sure that they are still relevent today, but they are -
    01 500 001 & 02 511 008
  • I have exactly the same problem as "contentment", i have my annual statement from August last year but can't see any S numbers and as yet had no luck logging onto my NPower account - it does not recognise my email address for some reason??

I've done some digging though and found last year's annual statement. On here it says that I only use a fraction of the electricity I'm being being charged for. I pay £95/month, but in the year leading up to August 2011 i used £380 of electricity!! The plot thickens.

I called NPower today questioning this and the man bamboozled me with all this rubbish, then in the end told me that I was in £90 debt to them?? So I called Scottish Power, again, and they told me that based on the info from my annual statement and a set of readings I gave them that I'm paying well over the odds, by the tune of £50/month (sounds a bit too good to be true)..... But they can't supply me with my electricity because of this related meter! Aaargh!!

I'm going to phone NPower tomorrow and ask them about this related meter again, but I'm getting fed up with all this!!!!!

It could be something as simple as a company owned meter, I know that when BG install 'Onstream' meters, the householder has a heck of a job switching companies as the meter belongs to BG and the new supplier can't touch it.

Can you post a photo of the meter and if not can you see anywhere on it that says 'property of ....'

Onstream were just MOP for Bgas, also used United Utilities and Siemens.

Should be no issue to transfer with an onstream meter, nothing other than what bgas would have installed themself.

The S number with 500 in it is an unrestricted meter. The S number with 511 in it is a 2-rate meter. To change supplier you need to quote the bottom line (13 digits) from both S numbers as they should move as a pair. For the information provided I can't see a reason why another supplier can not take you on.

    Thanks Spiro
Maybe you could confirm what i have been able to find out.
Both meter time-switch codes 500 and 511 are "related" metering system common to all domestic use, but the 511 is Distribution Network Operaters specific?
The 01 is normal Domestic Unrestricted & 02 is Domestic Economy 7
The MPAN is allocated by the area distribution network opperator, in my case Northern Power Grid
I have been onto Northern Power site and found that my address appears twice because of the two MPAN's. You say that both meters can be under the same MPAN, would this make a difference?
Now spoken to someone at Scottish Power that knows what they are talking about; What i thought was an economy 7 meter is in fact an economy 10 which is the problem as only 3 suppliers can supply to this tarriff.
  • There are only a select number (2 or 3) suppliers who are actually in a position to support an Economy 10 meter, which may be the problem.
