Related Electricity Meter????????????????

I tried to change electricity suppliers earlier today, from NPower to Scottish Power, but I was told I couldn't do so because I have a 'related meter'. The girls I spoke to at Scottish Power didn't really know what it was and all she could tell me was that I couldn't switch (at least not to them) with one of these meters.

I read a bit about a similar problem in another forum but there doesn't seem to be a resolution to the problem. Does anyone have any useful info or could possibly tell me what i can do - if anything - to change supplier?

Cheers,

Do you have more than one electricity meter?

Is this in a residential property (a house, flat etc) or in a business property?

Do you have a bill to hand? If so what are the top numbers of your supply point number? (the box with a big S on the left hand side and some numbers in boxes to the right)
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Frequenty related MPANs only have 1 meter but with 2 MPANs.

If you have a related MPAN there should be 2 S numbers on your bill. If you have and post the top line from both then I can confirm what you have. This line does not allow anyone to identify you it only relates to the metering, the bottom line identifies your property.

  • Thanks for the replies!!

As far as I'm aware I have only one meter and at the risk of sounding stupid I don't know what an MPAN is? I live in a small block of 6 flats and all my bills are generated online - unfortunately I've forgotten my password and/or username so can't access my bills at the moment. As soon as I can get access I'll post those details.

I'll also send an e-mail to Graeme @ ScottishPower, although from conversations I've already had with Scottish Power, I don't think I am eligible to switch to them.

Thanks again for all your help.

You will have something like this on your bill. This is your supply number (MPAN).

It could be something as simple as a company owned meter, I know that when BG install 'Onstream' meters, the householder has a heck of a job switching companies as the meter belongs to BG and the new supplier can't touch it.

Can you post a photo of the meter and if not can you see anywhere on it that says 'property of ....'

You hope that as it usually does, it gets warmer.
While this is not of course certain, it's fairly likely.

100 a week does sound a bit steep.
Firstly, have you got actual readings, not what you're paying.

Are you paying off any debts?
    If so, at what rates.
What are you being charged per unit of gas/electricity - is this correct according to the meter?
  • I have the same problem of a related meter; which means your propery has more than one meter. I cannot change to another supplier unless i have one of the meters removed, the meter cannot simply not be used because the property would still show as having two meter numbers and so the meter can only be removed by my current supplier for which they would charge me in order for them to loose me as a customer. Why my current supplier can supply me and others cannot is a total mystery.

This is wrong on a number of points, a related MPAN (meter point - bottom line of S number on your bill) does not need to have 2 meters, lots only have one. You can change suppliers without having one meter removed, the new supplier just has to register both MPANs. Do you have gas or not, if yes then you are unlikely to be better off unless your current supplier is billing you on a single rate tariff.
